using the manual steptronic all the time?

Who uses it all the time and would it produce more wear on the engine/transmission using it like this?

As I am old and lazy, I only use it on the twisties. No point using it on the motorways as far as I can see.

Edit - I love using steptronic - it is great fun, and it changes gear more quickly than the auto shift in either "D" or "DS".

Whenever I manage to score parole from my wife and jnr and I'm behind the wheel then YEP it's tronic all the way.. good fun...:driver:

I use it 25% of the time, mainly on the straight away and twists. Otherwise, it's automatic all the way. My other car is stick, so I can live w/o driving it all the time. Also, I don't believe that it will put more wear on the engine as long as you don't dog it...

never tried it yet. ;)

As for wear & tear, using it all the time, I would say over the long term yes you would tend to damage the transmission. Not because of the system, but because you are more likely to take the revs far higher in gear then the 'auto' function would.

IMO, steptronic is useless...if you want a manual, buy one :)

The transmission on my Audi A6 went to shit and I often had it in sport mode or tiptronic... I wonder now if that contributed to the transmission's demise.......

Wagner 11-01-2007 12:23 PM

The revs you operated it at contributed to the demise.

I rarely use manual mode. Sport Drive is often good enough unless there are some slower speed corners where I'm concerned the transmission hasn't quite adapted to its most aggressive shift map yet. (Yes guys, there's two distinctly different shift maps for each Drive and SD mode)

I love it but would not use it more than I should. Just like previous posts, I'm afraid to screw up the tranny and drive a loaner.
