DVD Headrest Install.....
See link for pictures: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e70-forum/...s-painted.html
Hey Everyone, Anyone here installed there own DVD headrest entertainment system? I have read previous posts that people have been able to tap the wires somewhere under the arm rest console (since it is already pre-wired for the OEM entertainment system). I am trying to find out if anyone has instructions on removing the console or if anyone has installed it somewhere else. I also want to find out if anyone has removed the backing of the seat so I can route the headrest post wires. I was hoping someone already have done it before I try and break something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Update 1 (26NOV07): DVD Headrest System is about complete. Everything is now functional, only thing to do is mount the control module. I will post pictures as soon as I can. Why I went with Vizualogic (Information below is from my experience and my opinion only, I am not here to offend anyone that already has Invision System or the representative of Invision here on X5world, I repeat this is to share my experience and opinion with the X5world community): 1. Looks.....you can see and tell the difference for yourself, this also depends on the looks your going for. 2. Cost.....a bit cheaper I believe (I did the install myself so I saved on labor too). 3. I Read up on a lot of reviews and called many stereo shops and they chose Vizualogic (who knows if they get better pricing or cut back from the manufacturer and that is why they chose Vizualogic, just for thought). 4. Size of the headrest, did not want something too big, it is a slightly bigger than the OEM headrest, but nothing where it is noticable, it looks like the OEM headrest (I found this out from another X5world member, I forgot who, but thanks for the information). 5. Color match is great, it is pretty identical to me. I am very satisfied, I will purchase from them again. 6. Features are identical, features listed below:
Any other questions, just let me know and I will try to get back to you ASAP. Thanks for all your input, greatly appreciated. See link for pictures: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e70-forum/...s-painted.html |

Denalio: Thank you for the quick reply and help. Would that be Constant power or Accessory power?
I know four wires is what I will be needing to tap: 1. Constant Power 2. Accessory Power 3. Ground 4. Parking (Not needed to operate system) Thanks again! |

Denalio: Thanks again for the information. So just use the switched power and do not even use the constant power (which would make it safe from draining the battery)? Just in case I need the constant power, would you happen to know where I could tap into?
Thanks! |
Which headrest system are you installing? Invision, Visualogic?
|
Wait a minute, unless I am reading wrong, isnt cig lighter constant power?
Where was the switched? are both switched and constant power in the bundle coming from cigarette lighter? Quote:
|
Cig lighter is 12V switched. It only works when the car is on. You may also be able to use a wire in the back of the seat that is switched. When you get the back off the seat there should be wires running to the headrest or the seat fans (if you have ventalated seats and/or comfort seats). With the aux/cigarette lighter there will be three wires 1) constant 2) switched 3) ground. Use a voltmeter to determine which one is switched. Test each wire while the car is off then when on. Use the 3M t-taps to tap your wire, no cutting thus not voiding your warranty.
|
Denalio: Thanks again for the quick reply. Still undecided, but I will let you know as soon as I purchase it, I am just getting ready for the install.
Just for clarification....Taping into the lighter wire console, there is a constant power wire there too? Is accessory power considered to be my cig lighter wire? Would you happen to remember the size of the torx screw? Would you also happen to remember which 3M t-taps you used? Thanks! |

Take some pics of the install and let us know how you make out. |
08WhtX5: I definitely will.

I did a roof mounted install (so it can be seen from 3rd row) ... http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e70-forum/...uk-photos.html
I took power from the centre console. The rear cigaratte lighter panel simply "pops off". I cut the cigarette lighter power cables, inserted a terminal/screw block and tapped off that for switched power - it comes on when the engine is started / 2nd stage of ignition (little hint, push the "start button" without your foot on the brake to boot up to 2nd stage ignition without starting the engine). My dvd player did not need a permanent power source - it stores all memory settings without it. Audio is via either InfraRed headphones (4 sets stored in the car), and I also have a cable which runs (hidden) to the aux-input, so you can listen to DVDs through the stereo. Works great. |
Santan1974: Thanks for the information! Did you remove the center console?
|
aux -input
what if you don't have aux-input? is there another way i can get audio sound for my DVD PLAYER?

Looks good. The Visualogic looks better than the Invision. Why did you go with the Visualogic? Are the features the same? Wireless? How is the color match? Match looks good from the pics.

If I didn't have competition, I wouldn't be where I am today in the industry. Thank you for being professional. Best of luck with your system, it does look good. -Law  |
Wow, looks great! I like the clean install of the Vizualogic monitors. The Invision are too big, and almost the whole back of the headrest is plastic with buttons and plugs. The best looking headrest monitors by far are found in the new Range Rover - doesn't get any better; but I really like yours...

acedeucy: Thank you!
King: Thank you! |
Looks good...I wonder if (Vizualogic) they work with the motorized confomt seats or if they have an option for those? ANy idea?
|
nynd: Thank you! I believe they make kits now for the comfort seats.

Nice install pare. I wish I have that instead of the factory RES.

I have a dealer who does Vizualogic! |

Hans, were is your dealer located in Belgium ? Do you know what de price is for new X5 with comfort seats ? Groeten. |
I spoke to the UK Importer today for Vizualogic....very helpful. They do have a system to the 08 Comfort Seats in the pipeline but it's not quite ready yet....it will be a hefty £1499! It sounds like a very flexible system though...both headrests come with their own DVD player and wireless headphones. They can also use the unit to play DVD/watch TV on the Satnav screen.
The system for the 08 comfort seats will look like the one on this page http://www.vizualogic.com/active_headrest.html The guy said it is not possible to mount inside the headrests with the 08 comfort seats. |

Don't like the look of the package on the back of my seats. |
Yes it looks pretty bloody awful in my opinion, if it was half that size it might be okay. I think I would rather get a cheap portable DVD player with the temporary mounts they have for in car viewing than that. If I was going to spend that much money I would rather have the OEM BMW aftermarket kit with the two screens mounted on brackets behind the headrests.

Not to slam te vizualogic, but just as food for thought. I was installing the INvision system on a Saturday some months ago, and ran into a problem (not theirs, I did not read the diagram correctly). I called and left a message on Lawrence's cell phone, even though I did not expect to hear back until Monday. 10 minutes later he is calling me back and 10 minutes after that I am watching movies on the system. THAT IS SERVICE!!

Outstanding service! Please post pictures of your install. |
Dbinc,
looking great that install. I am thinking about taking the plunge. Couple of questions if you don't mind. What's the gauge ie size of the wires with the cigar lighter, need to get some t taps, guessing 12-14 is the size. Also did you end up connecting only the switched power supply? I am not keen on a constant feed as the X5 tends to empty its battery pretty quickly anyway... Thanks C |
cpd1: Thank you!
1. Gauge size: 12-14 is good, but the only choice I had here was the 14-18 and I used the self stripping connectors since the local stores did not have any T-Tap connectors (see link for picture: http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=676). 2. Power supply: Switched power supply is all I used, no need for the constant since it keeps the DVD information with the switched power. Draining the battery was also the reason why I did not connect the constant power. Any other questions just let me know and I will be glad to assist you in anyway I can. Good luck and post some pictures when your finished. |

dbinc,
Thanks v much for the reply. I am pleased about the switched supply being the only one power feed required. Did you connect only that wire or the constant one as well into the switched feed? Also, how easy were the seat back to remove, any broken clip to replace? Thanks again C |
Shumdit: Post your install pictures.....
cpd1: 1. I connected both switch and constant. 2. Seat back was easy to remove, just pull back firmly from the top sides and then lift up. I did not break any clips or had to replace anything. It is pretty easy to install, just time consuming. Any other questions, just let me know and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can. |
Thanks dbinc, really appreciate the help. Thinking of taking out the back of the center console to put the control unit and feed my ipod cable from the center storage. Any idea how easy it is to remove the back of the console? I was looking at it earlier but couldn't see any obvious ways/screws to take out

I removed the side carpet panels, once removed there will be 2 or 3 screws on each side(you will not miss it, you may not even have to remove these, just inspect how it is fastened). Then firmly pull back from the top or bottom, I forgot which one, but you will see where it is fastened. This will also help, see link: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...3&mospid=50043 |
Thanks again dbinc. Had spent some time on the realOEM website to try to get a better idea. Shame they don't sell the technical manuals as they used too years ago, that had all the stuff!
I will let you know how I get on with it, placing the order for the hearest next week. C |
cpd1: I agree with you on the technical manuals, I was looking all over, but non to be found. Good luck and post your install.
