"Best" is subjective some people prefer certain brands over others. Then you have to decide what size of wheel to go with (18" are recommended) and then if you want to go with runflats or non-runflats. If you want to stay with runflats Dunlop Grantdtrek WT 3M. Non-runflats Pirelli Scorpion Snow & Ice. Alternative non-runflat would be Dunlop SP Wintersport. If you decide on non-runflats throw a can of puncture seal in your trunk or get the BMW tire repait kit or the Airman puncture seal kit comes with pump and sealant.

Dunlop M3 best overall, Pirelli Scorpion a bit better on ice and snow but poorer on tarmac

i've heard that the bridgestone blizzak's lm-25 4x4 are best for this vehicle and tire rack says they are much better than Pirelli's. any thoughts?

Like Denalio said, 'Best' is very subjective - IMHO, any of the snow tires mentioned in this thread are great. I have had Blizzaks, various Dunlops and Hakkapeliittas as snow tires on various cars over the years and they have all been outstanding and a vast improvement over all seasons. No one set of tires stood out over any other (maybe the hakkas on a RWD car).
Regardless of which set you choose: snow tires + AWD = in great shape for winter.

i agree with your overall point... however, disagree that they are subjective. certainly snow tires can be tested against each other in some scientific basis to determine which performs better on snow/ice versus others.

This is a big question also for me. I will get my E70 with 19" 255/50 (front) and 285/45 (rear). It seem that no runflat are yet available for the size 285/45, so I'm considering to install no runflats. Is it technically possible, given that E70 it's set to be used with runflats?

The problem with these 'scientific studies' is that you then have to take this information and ask some questions to apply to your situation and then you are back to square one - too many variables.

- how much snow do you drive in, how deep and how often?
- Are you willing to accept more noise on highway/low speeds for improved grip in deep snow?
- Are you willing to sacrifice some hadling for improved grip in deep snow?
- What about traction when its not snowing - best traction in ice/snow will not have best traction in dry pavement/rain
- Is cost a concern?

Not arm wrestling here but think that the choices offered by tire rack or BMW are great and are pretty much always the top performers in all studies - Pirelli scorpion ice and snow, Blizzak, Dunlop Grandtrek winter etc. etc. IMHO not much difference between this top tier.

...especially for Boston winters - we're not hauling across the tundra here ;)
