4.8 Gas mileage
Can you, please post your litres per 100km, please
Full tank lasts me for 500km normal driving. The tank in E70, I believe, is 83L versus 93L in E53, which makes it eating ~17L per 100km for a normal driving. Dos it sound right to you? I have no sports package. |
i think you're right ..
i got about 12L per 100 km today on my way back home but again , i was only doing 100 km/hr on cruise control |
14.9 for me
|
Currently 5.7 km / L
Highway & street combined. Engine has done 7k so far. Cheers, |
I'm getting 13.0mile/gal(almost city driving)
|
i get about 13miles/gallon as well. I guess that's average for the 4.8
|
The best I could get out of the 4.8i was 17mpg so far in a combination of city/freeway
KEF |
The reason I am asking is that I am comparing it to my beloved 2004 4.4 and it was eating approximately 16L per 100km, so I was doing ~550km on a tank, though the tank was 93L
|
average per OBC is 15.3 religously.
my old 4.8is 2004 was about 14 and change. don't know what the conversions are but hope that helps |
why did they make the vehicle bigger but the gas tank smaller??? crazy...
|
Hav an '08 and gas mileage doesn't come close to the sticker. Also agree that tank is very small for such a large vehicle.
|
if someone needs to worry or even think about mileage on the 4.8 perhaps its not the car for him / her?
|
I don't think its a worry, more like a "things that make you go hmm" considering the wide differences in one persons to the next.
however I think mine actually went up to 15.3 after 3k miles on the odo. |
it is quite sad that BMW built a vehicle with about 40 miles LESS range than their previous vehicle!!
|
If you are going to worry/complian about gas mileage why buy a 4.8. Some people have 70k to drop on a new car and they complain about a $80 fill up???

Gas consumption and the need for the premium fuel were serious factors against getting the X5...
Some history... As current owner of Honda Odyssey, which comes with VCM (variable cylinder management), I was initially very aware of the gas consumption metrics, as the VCM was suppose to save on gas by deactivating 3 cyls when there is no need for torque (ie highway cruising). After all, the van was rated 20/28. Realistically, the only time I got 24mpg when I went NY to Toronto. I tried different driving styling, and managed to get 19mpg in the city driving by trying to anticipate every traffic light and the drivers ahead of me. BUT IT WAS NOT FUN TO DRIVE AT ALL !!!! So, after 1.5 years, I just stopped paying attention to that, and had fun. With the X5, I will try to enjoy the car from the day one :) It was not designed to save on fuel ! V8 with 360 horsies... what do you expect ?! |
15.4 L city for 100km.. I get up to 750 highway range, around 500 city per tank.
|
Looks like we are averaging 13 mpg- kinda what I figured. Almost all local driving.

I'm really sick of people assuming that I don't care about gas milage because I paid 90,000 for the truck. well news flash to those who assume, I DO CARE and yes i drive a 4.8i.
|
After 8,000km of driving mine sits on 17.8l/100km which I think is quite reasonable.... ( my previous car - a 4.0l turbo 6, which I drove like I stole it, managed 18l/100km )
At the end of the day, if you can afford the car, then you can afford the fuel to go in it...... I don't even look at the cost anymore..... just fill / pay/ & go..... |
y5choi,
Do not pay attention to these people. It doesn't matter what they think. :-) They are probably kids who get offended by a simple math...:-) |
I'm getting 14.4 avg after about 800 miles.

It amazes me that this topic is an issue on this forum.... we are not buying 500kg econobox cars here... we are buying LARGE VEHICLES..... they WILL use MORE FUEL....
To those who think this is a problem...... BUILD A BRIDGE... and...... Me ? I'm too busy enjoying the bmw experience...... |

There is nothing wrong with discussing this topic and we should be proud that we care enough to demand better. |
