A/C always turns on when start engine

When I start the engine, the A/C turns on automatically. I turned it off before stop engine but turn the car on the next time with it being back on at the low setting again. Anyone knows how stop A/C on automatically???

golfer4life 11-28-2007 04:12 AM

Mine is the same thing. It does it on my E53 also so I thought this is just normal.

~KaiFy GaiwanY~ 11-28-2007 05:31 AM

so is mine .. but i wish there was a way to stop that because i usually leave the car running for 5 min or so to warm the engine up and its not good to warm it up when the AC is on

y5choi 11-28-2007 11:04 AM

mine does as well. I thought it was part of the windshield defrosting system but then I don't see why Kaify's spec x5 would also do the same. oh wait, may be it does get cold enough at night times there??? I don't know..

drod 11-28-2007 11:08 AM

there must be a way to configure this on idrive.....(must be a setting somewhere!)

no not really , its mostly hot and humid here ..

my dads range also does the same thing , it switches the AC on when u start the car ..

i wish there was settings for this ..

but the 1st thing i do when i start the car in the morning is switch off the AC fast until warming up the engine is over

drod 11-28-2007 11:31 AM

so here in the winter time we have to deal with the AC kicking in each time we start her up??? that sucks!

plus in cases where the battery is weak..(seems to be a problem noted on other posts) this will only zap the remaining strength thus making it even more difficult to start up!!

there's got to be a setting somewhere!!

all this high tech mumble jumble only creates more problems for us!

yes drod , you are right ..

Fastbuck 11-28-2007 02:13 PM

I suppose BMW would argue that this is Climate Control rather than AC.

Mine does that too, but I thought it was the last setting? So sometimes its the heater, but I'm not sure. I took it to service because I thought it was not normal, and although they said it is normal in a lot of BMWs (she didn't seem sure) they updated my iDrive to the new version but still no luck. Oh well, at least I got an update ;) but still gotta deal with the annoyance of turning off A/C everytime. Hey your name sounds familiar, weren't you bidding on my Black Y-Spoke Style 214 wheels on eBay? I can't believe they sold for $400 OVER the buy-it-now price. I guess some people loved the powder coated look. Anyway, welcome to the forum!

what are you talking about? .... on my 2002 x5 if i had the AC off when i turned the car off.... then it stayed off even when restarting the car. if i had it on, it stayed on.

are you saying in the new x5's the AC button lights up and stays on EVERY time you start the car, no matter what the setting was before?? are you sure you aren't switching keys as i think this can be set to the key programming.

~KaiFy GaiwanY~ 11-28-2007 02:59 PM

yup .. im sure im not switching keys :)

That should only happen if you left it on Auto with A/C before you stopped the engine. My A/C does not come on everytime I start my X5?

now we're getting somewhere!!!

jsg 11-28-2007 05:13 PM

From my experience, the A/C light is on whenever the climate control is set to Auto (i.e., the green light in the center of the driver side knob is on). So the A/C will automatically be on when you start the car assuming you left it on Auto when you last shut the car off (with the same key).

While the A/C is "on" it doesn't necessarily blow cold air (i.e., when it is cold out, like it is getting to be here in NYC), it is just on and ready to blow cold air, if needed, to regulate the temp in the car to the auto temp setting....

folks, don't be confused... "A/C" is not meant just to provide cold air.... it's an air compressor... and can/should be used to help remove moisture from inside the vehicle and particularly helpful when it's raining outside and preventing fogging from occuring on the windshield. it can be on WITH hot air... and many times should be. too many people think it's just related to 'cold' air... and that is not true.

mwares212 11-28-2007 07:19 PM

In fact, I prefer to leave the A/C on in my car all year. Through New York winters and all as it effectively controls the moisture in the air.

Beat me to it. Marcx5 is correct. Humidity control.

The reserve was $2500, buy-it-now was $3200 and ended up selling for $3607. I didn't know that was even possible lol.
