US-registered E70 in Munich last Saturday

Hello Folks,

when I was going home in my E70 on Saturday I passed a to my opinion brand new X5 E70 3.0si in saphire black. It was the US-Version (dual tachmeter scale) and had a registration plate from MA !!!

Nothing special so far for most of you people, but that happened in Munich, Germany.... somebody from US managed to pick up his X5 in the BMW Welt as I would guess.

a member of this board ??

Regards

Christian

That's weird as all US BMW's that are picked up in Munich get the Zoll plates. I can only guess that he picked up the car and registered it in the US, then had to go to Germany for work and shipped the X5 there. I would assume that they would have to get a Munich plate if they plan on staying there for work for a while.???

Weird indeed. I once saw an Infiniti FX45 with NY plates parked on the streets of Rome Italy. I was so surprised I took some pictures.

Happens more then we all think.
At times it might also be done for tax benefits so that the owner does not pay taxes on import of the vehicle, as the car gets older, tax becomes less so if they deside to sell it few years down the road, they would save money. There are restrictions on how long the vehicle can stay in the country while its registred elsewhere so some plan a trip into neighboring country and then drive back in few days later.

I had seen a Hummer with Jersey Plates in Ukraine, Odessa on Primorski Blvd in front of Londonskaya 4star hotel.

I realize that we have MX and CA plates come here, but IDK about across the pond... i guess if they don't say not to...

I had seen a 1972 Chevy in Russia around year 1988, with Texas license plates !!!!

No, that's not possible, all X5 SAVs are produced in the USA and are not eligible for European Delivery. :dunno:

Somebody from Germany have bought US model and didn't make all to registrate car in Europe. There is lot of US X5 in Europe, mostly in post Soviet Union countries who are not EU members...
