Impressions after 2500 miles in three weeks

I have had the X5 for 4 weeks now and have almost 3000 miles on it. Not a single problem. First road trip was Boston to Montreal that included driving in whiteout conditions in Canada. The X was rock solid. Navigation was spot on and a joy to use with HUD. MPG was 19-20 for the trip, higher on the way back as it is downhill. No kidding I got 20.6MPG from No. N.H. to just south of Boston. I have the 4.8. The second road trip was to D.C. and back in two days(funeral). Very comfortable(comfort seats) and easy to drive(active steering). There were 5 of us including my 11 year old who just loved being by himself in the THIRD row. He sat back there a total of 18 hrs. over a two day period. He wouldn't change seats with his brother so he must have been comfortable. This has been the only time I have used the third row but we could not have done the trip without it. So if you have kids and have doubts about getting it, I'd say do it unless your kids are over 5'5". One complaint about the third row is that if only one seat is upright the drink holder is not accessible. The X5 has certainly met my expectations.

Great post! I am about to put my new 4.8 (bought it in late October) to the road test, traveling cross country and back for the holidays. I have 3 kids (16, 14, and 7) and meeting up with my oldest at her college (she's 19). I have downsized from a Suburban which is a bit tricky from a space perspective, but we've shipped all the presents ahead and I bought a hitch-mounted cargo box for the back for luggage. Should be fun.

You can't buy that kind of marketing.
Great review.

I went from a Suburban to the X5 and there is a world of difference between the two in terms of luggage capacity but there is even a bigger difference in the way the two drive. I wouldn't have made the two trips in as short of time or as safely as I did. With less cargo room you have to pack carefully. With the Suburban whatever you thought of you threw in the back. I am glad I now have a truck with brakes that I feel confident in.
