First let me say that you shouldn't watch DVDs while driving but I know with aftermarket headunits they can be installed in such a way to operate when moving, its probably as simple as disconnecting a wire somewhere...I would call a private shop.

does anyone know how to do full screen video... even when parked?

My wife can watch the DVD while I drive, I did it for years in my other cars when traveling. I mean do people really watch it whiel they drive??? anyway we always put in movies that I have seen before that way I can listen and I alreayd know what is going on without watching it. |
I have an upgraded head unit in my X (E53), that allows me to run the dvd while in motion. Normally, it is just as simple as the unit being grounded out by one wire. That is how most units can tell that the vehicle is not in motion (It is connected to the hand brake or shift sensors).

that works on aftermarket units, but from my previous ones, there is a motion senosor that need to be tapped with a switch to turn on and off. or at least thats how some other ones worked, of course you could not even input data in those while moving, so at least BMW allows that.

the x5 only plays video when the car is in 'park'.... otherwise it only plays the sound. it does not matter if you are 'stopped' or in neutral.... only parked will allow the display to show video in the nav screen.

Let's just say that it will cost you less to buy a portable DVD/DivX player ($200-300) than doing the retrofit ! It will also have a bigger screen, it is own headphones (to prevent distraction to the driver), and can be carried with you on vacation...
