Suspension Noise (rear I think)

I have searched through the threads and have not found this particular issue that I seem to have.

When going over rough roads, I hear what sounds like an intertube being pinged, kind of a hollow boing sound. x5 3.0 is about 3 months old with 3000 miles and with 3rd row seats.

Any thoughts before I head up to the dealer?

Thanks

Same problem, at higher speeds, front suspension, rough roads. Haven't taken it to the dealer yet.

knocking noise in the rear hatch area

may have the same problem... Going to dealer jan. 3rd--- keep you posted on what the say...

Sounds like it could do with the anti-roll bar.

Hi
I experience as simular sound from my new E70 (275 tyres front & 315 on rear) - on roads between 20 & 60 miles per hour I can hear what I describe as a hollow roar from the front. I have noticed different road surface will make a slight difference but its alway in the background.
I took it to the dealer last week who checked the car over and found no fault with bearings etc..etc.. they also test drove another E70 they had and it was making exactly the same noise - so its obviously common to all E70 with larger tyres... I would be interested to know if anyone gets the noise on the standard tyre versions ???

jbharris123 01-02-2008 12:54 AM

hollow noise...

got the same hollow noise on my 08 standard tires... 20-60mph sounds about right. Sounds like the road bumps are making some sort of vibration in the tire. Maybe its the run flat tires...

NICKM 01-04-2008 07:47 PM

Hi all
ANy news from your dealer regarding this noise between 20 & 60 mph - what did they think it is ?? (hollow sound as if you are blowing over the top of an open pipe)

Knocking noise fixed...

Went to dealer on the 3rd... They kept it over night... The problem was the locking mechanism on the rear hatch, it was loose. They replaced it. No more noise--- not one little peep, nothing. Noise found and fixed. Hope this helps anybody with the same problem... As far as the noise 20-60mph... Dealer says it may be the tires since there run flat... I'm going back next week for a second opinion... 2008 4.8i black saphire

Latley I am getting noise only on bad roads espicial over pumps, I found out yesterday is coming from the driver seat, look like the fastening bolts needs to be tightened.

After Service Update

I finally took the car in for service, I don't know why I waited so long! Here is what they found:

There was in fact a service bulliten 370107 on this issue. It seems that the Spring Accumulators were faulty. They replaced the 'sprung accumulators' and all is well. The car is tight over the bumps and no more strange noises! :D :D

Lesson learned, if it does not seem right, have it checked...

Was this on the rear axle only ?

FirstBMW 05-19-2008 03:19 PM

Actually it was the front.

Interesting .. I've just had my anti roll bar replaced due to a noisy front end, after 5000 miles, its cured the fault 85% but I still have some noise and was wondering what else could be doing it. Do you have adaptive drive also ?

FirstBMW 05-19-2008 10:18 PM

I have the Sport Package, but do not have Active Steering.

I got two noises:

1. Door trim creak (both front) whenever I go uphill or downhill, especially combined with a turn. There's a creaking noise coming from the door trim area. I just hope it's not due to movement of the car's frame/body (it should be rigid right?). The car is just 1 month old!

2. One-off metal noise from behind on rough roads going at 30-50 km/h, perhaps suspension-related, perhaps some loose tailgate lock.

I hate having to bring it to the dealer and having them take anything apart especially interior trim.

They say Porsche builds much quieter car? I should've gotten the Cayenne.

Do you have the sport button just behind your shifter ?

Hi MUZ
My E70 is extremely noisy from the front end too - the car has been in and out of the dealers many times and even had the front diff replaced, but still have a hollow roaring noise coming from the front end - there has been many postings on here and other X5 forums regarding the same problem and the common factor is 20'' Bridgestone run flat tyres - my dealer let me drive 2 other X5's and they are all the same and when the car is lifted off the floor on a ramp and driven up to 60mph the noise has gone - hence proving its a tyre problem.
Hope this helps
Nick

I have the same problem. A hollow roaring noise in the background, coming from the front. Only about 4000 miles and 18" Run-flat Bridgestone OEM. It must not be tires.

Does anyone have more info on this service bulletin 370107 ?

Edit: I don't have the adaptive drive or the sport pack.

Sounds like Jed at the factory is substance abusing again ;) and unfortunately the whole quality control team had to be returned to the rehab centre for a check-up .. sounds like your one slipped through ..

Hi - I've been having a constant pitched noise when driving from 20 - 70 ish... The noise/tone would not change over different surfaces, just get louder etc.

I had upgraded to 214 rims and Conti DWS tires, after the upgrade I noticed the noise a lot more than with my 19 inch rims. I did notice it very faintly on the 19's which is why I started looking around at other possibilities, other than tire noise. Also, I got Vredestiens, had the noise, switched them to Conti DWS because my tire guy said it was the tread pattern... both tires made the noise.

After poking around, everyone has said both of my tire choices should be very quite (for the size), so I took it to the dealer, and they said it was tire noise, but later found a bolt was loose on the differential. They said they tightened and fixed the problem... But, the noise was still very much there. So I rotated the tires, checked for bad bearings and came up with nothing on my own.

I took it back to the dealer, and they finally diagnosed it as a bad rear differential.

Replacing the rear diff did nothing for the noise...

Has anyone solved this issue yet?!?
