Very strange camera behavior.... please help

Funny thing is that I was just getting home from the dealer where I made an appointment to take care of a couple of things for Monday, when this happened:

I'm backing up into my driveway, and instead of the traditional camera view coming on, the whole screen turns into the "direction of travel" nav view; on both sides of the screen.

The P light does come on, indicating that the camera should be on, and as I backed up and got close to items I heard the PDC sensor beeps... but no camera view, just the nav view as described above.

So I thought, okay maybe it's a glitch so I drove up the street and back, backed up into my driveway and the same thing occurred.

I double checked my settings for the camera, and all the options are checked off. But even if they weren't, I wouldn't imagine the camera view turning into the direction of travel nav view.

Has anyone experienced this, that can give me some insight? Thank you!

not sure what the cause may be...have you tried hitting the PDC button while you're in backup mode to see if the camera turns back on??? this button activates/deactivates the camera and backup sensors...

i have a button issue but the camera does turn on...i just can't turn it off manually on a consistent basis... (button is loose or something)

scheduled to have it looked at next week...

Yes, I have pushed the camera button and all it does is turn off the "nav" view, and when I push it, it comes back on, but no camera view.

sounds like your camera died

Great!! :(

at this point tap the camera or around it to see if it's just loose...

not much else you can do...(but take her back to the dealer)

With so many issues now, I'm wondering if I'm going to have a lemon on my hands. I only have 650 miles on it!

don't yell lemon just yet.. give them time to resolve these things...

definitely keep records on what gets done....

Happened to me once or twice as well. As usual I was in a hurry to actually try to look at it. Did what I had to do, next time I used the car, it was back to normal. I think in my case it was showing up blank screen.

I am a little irritated of the problem, but it hasnt been constant nor I really did have time to take a picture of the problem.

I also on occasion have other minor glitches.
1. Standing (parked) in NYC in between tall buildings and Navi by itself started to show as I am slowly drifting into the ocean. Within half hour I was half way to Nova Scotia... After I started to move it was still drifting for another 5-10 min.
2. Incoming phone calls at least twice came in, but I wasnt able to communicate with the other party.
3. MP3 CD was taking a long time to read on about 3 occasions and once didnt read untill I reloaded it.

Few minor bugs, nothing made me run to the dealer, but it is annoying and if it continues, I will start keeping a log and documenting things with pictures, etc.

Still dont condier it a lemon because the issues are minor and have not really disrupted my day/commute.

I had the same problem, once. After I've shutdown and restarted the car, the problem went away and has not been back since.

Same here, I've had it once this morning.
What I find a bit spooky is that I had never seen it, read this thread yesterday and boom, this morning I experienced it for the first time... :-)

If it starts repeating I will also take it to the dealer and print a copy of this thread to show them that this is not unique.

And in the future be very careful about the threads you choose to read...

How I wish I had never read this thread. Almost immediately after reading it my brand new (1 week old) X5 4.8 got the map screen of death in reverse mode. Then the screen went black for 10 minutes before the computer reset and everything went back to normal (restarting car did not help).

This is like a bad horror movie!

let's hope it does not happen again

Wow, that's hilarious! We have two members now that have experienced this problem since my OP

I've been having the exact problem! My car has been in the shop for over a week now as my rear camera has done a few wierd things lately. I've had issues with the rear camera before and they've replaced, changed the CCC unit and it was ok for a few months until recently it started to blank out, put itself into test mode which shows a bunch of colors, and finally, it goes into Dual Nav mode showing two maps.

The dealer opened a PUMA case and I e-mail them pictures of what happens. So far, they said the techs in both Germany and SC are stumped.

I'll keep you guys posted as to what the fix is....

Chris

I'm the OP and in my case, it seems to have gone away after the original occassions when it did it twice.
