I6 Diesel vs. V8 Petroleum Weight Difference...
According to BMW UK:
V8 4.8i = 2180 kg I6 3.0sd = 2185 kg I6 3.0si = 2070 kg So 6-cyclender diesel is actually 5 kg heavier than V8? Is that right? http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/pricesand...-bmwuk,00.html |
I belive diesel engines are usually, if not always, made from steel to withstand the higher combustion temps. Steel is heavier than Aluminium and Magnesium-alloy used in petrol engines these days. So yes - I would think those numbers are correct.

Did you also notice the permitted axel weight difference between front and rear axel: Front/Rear V8 1345/1540 SD 1335/1555 So V8 is permitted to take more weight on front since less weight engine ;) |
While diesel engines are usually made from steel to withstand the higher peak cylinder pressures, that is not true of these models. BMW is using an alloy block for the diesel engine.
The extra weight is likely related to ancillary equipment (diesel heaters if so equipped, heavier battery, heavier starter motor). |
