Apple iPhone Snap-in Adapter

Does anyone have this in their X? If so, how do you like it? I'm thinking about having this installed once my SAV is delivered. Would this mean I cannot have my iPod connected at the same time?

"The adapter is for vehicles equipped with the BMW Assist system with Bluetooth wireless technology. The system provides a safe and secure place to dock your Apple iPhone while driving and will charge your phone battery when the vehicle is running. Adapter also provides a connection to the roof mounted telephone antenna on your car for improved cellular reception. Vehicle must be equipped with BMW Assist (SA639) with Bluetooth wireless technology"

how would you use the music function of the phone then?

kustjag 02-12-2008 12:25 PM

Just my 2 cents...the phone adapters are a waste of money and space. The e70 uses bluetooth so you can pair any phone with it and with the way technology changes, you will probably upgrade your phone in the next 1-2 years, before you upgrade your car.

I use the holder on the driver's door for my nokia e61

I don't get it, other than for charging the phone, why would I put my Iphone in the cradle?? My previous car used to have the cradle for phone but now that the bluetooth technology allows me to pair to my car without cradle why would anybody get a cradle? I can charge the Iphone with inexpensive USB charger.

I rather have my Iphone in my pocket when I am in the car.

For music, I have the regular Ipod all the time connected to the car

kustjag & Awdnut, you both make valid points. When you connect your phone via bluetooth, does it use the antenna on top of the car for better reception as well? I never use the bluetooth in our E90(it's pretty much my wife's car). I also like the way it sits in the cradle. I have visions of flicking through email or sending text messages while it still sits in the cradle...when the car is stopped, of course.

When you connect via bluetooth the phone uses it's own aerial.

When you use the snap in it uses the car's aerial, but I dont know if this boosts the signal.

This got me thinking about bluetooth and iPhone pairing. Will X5 able to control the music player portion of the iPhone over bluetooth? Or is it only limited to the phone functions only.

Is it clear that this snap-in adaptor will work in an E70 WITHOUT the need for an eject box? This is the problem I've run into after ordering a snap-in adaptor for my wife's Motorola Razr, i.e., it can't connect without the addition of an eject box......

The iPhone's Bluetooth is operational only for phone functions. If you want to control it via iDrive, then you must have the iPod (6FL) option and connect it via the y-cable.

does the current ipod (6FL) option give connectivity to an outside antenna?

No. And I'm not 100% certain that the snap-in adapter does either. This would be a function of the iPhone that isn't documented anywhere I can find. The adaptor for the iPhone is a standard iPod adaptor and I haven't seen any other accessories that boost an iPhone signal this way.

swesson 02-12-2008 11:40 PM

Ooops! I DID find one...

Eject Box First, Then Snap in Adapter

X5WannaBe:

Yes, you have to have the Eject box which the snap in adapter mounts to. As said by others, the only advantage is the integrated look of the phone in the car, and the better reception gained by use of the external antenna.

I bought this iphone cradle 3 days after I had the car and I noticed an improvment to the signal as I have o2 here in the UK and it's not so hot but I notice 5 bars in the cradle and 2/3 bars just on top of the arm rest.
The cradle only charges the phone and uses the outside antenna everything else is via bluetooth - I use a seperate ipod with the little 'Y' cable for my music - hope i've answered your question
