Brake Dust

4 Attachment(s)
hey guys :)

i waxed my car including the rims like 2 days ago .. i heard from ppl that waxing the rims helps repel brake dust but is this normal ? i mean i used to get the same amount of brake dust all the time but not this way .. the brake dust seem darker ..

cheers

Ps : it has not been raining here .. the weather has been sign so before u say anything abt how the weather caused the appearance of this brake dust , save it :)

Denalio 02-13-2008 09:08 AM

Sometimes I find that applying certain waxes with the rubbing motion adds a positive charge to the rim (static charge) and this will attract more dust and cause it to cling to the rim. Just a thought. However, a good rinse should remove the dust easier with wax.

Denalio , that is right , i can take off the brake dust with just a swipe of my finger and the rims still feel "waxy" ..

how often do u think i should wax the car and rims ?

Lovely

Maybe BMW should include those in their Promo pictures

What a PITA

:withstupi

I will NEVER complain about BMW brake dust again.

motordavid 02-13-2008 10:15 AM

Butt ugly for "two days" worth of driving...
try the Search Tab: pages of info and opins
on brake dust, how to reduce, clean, etc.

~KaiFy GaiwanY~ 02-13-2008 10:49 AM

its okay , i love the stopping power but honestly , the brake dust is driving me nuts !!

jayo 02-13-2008 11:43 AM

You can change your brake pads to ones that are a bit harder, and dont give off so much dust. The only trouble with them is that they can tend to squeek.

I was under the impression that you should never user ordinary car wax on your wheels because it melts/runs with the heat build up in your brakes/wheels

~KaiFy GaiwanY~ 02-13-2008 11:45 AM

is there specific "wheel wax" ?

thanks but im not in the USA and in the UAE , you cant find a lot of autocare products !! the only pones ive found here so far are armour all ..

y5choi 02-13-2008 12:27 PM

bmw dealers actually carry break dust repellants here in Canada. Ask the dealer for it

alexmish 02-13-2008 09:16 PM

What I see on your pics is the tire dressing overspray, which attracts the dust... When you spray your tires to look 'wet', make sure you wipe off the overspray from the rims ! And dont spray too much !

Quicksilver 02-13-2008 11:08 PM

Simple solution? If it bugs ya Wash em. Takes 10 minutes to do them all if all you want to do is get the dust off. No more than 10 minutes a wheel if you want a really great job including the inside of the wheels.

Yes, use a polymer base wax "synthetic" Zaino is good. Then you can top coat with the brand "Wheel Wax" That's what I do.

thats right but the wheel dressing i use says on the instructions "do not wipe , any dripping on the rims will dry alone"

Hmm, it appears they lied. So the question is, which is more important to you, having shiny tires or not having pond scum on your rims?

~KaiFy GaiwanY~ 02-14-2008 06:06 AM

shiny wheels :P

oscar 02-14-2008 12:10 PM

Another idea that I've only had the patience to try once in the 25 years I've owned these cars is to clean & wax the whole wheel, inside & out.

My guess from your pictures is the rain released brake from the other side of the wheels & it slung onto the front.

Even just shooting the water hose on the back of the wheels will get rid of some of the build up.

Wagner 02-14-2008 12:34 PM

Ah, wash them.

jago 02-14-2008 03:00 PM

i know some people dont like them, but i use kleenwheels dust shields. unless you are super aggressive street driver or track your cars it shouldnt affect your braking performance..
i've used them on about 5 german cars in last 10-12 years with no issues.

Quicksilver 02-14-2008 03:49 PM

I said that; but he wasn't hearing it.

A trick I have seen for tire dressing is to get a piece of cardboard and cut it in a circular shape, the size of the wheel. Hold it in place when you spray the tires, to mask the rims from the spray.

Since you are a rich young man with an entourage, why do you care how difficult it is for one of your servants to clean your wheels? Simply whip them if they don't do it properly at least every other day!

He ought to get his entourage to carry him over to his squeeze's house, (that 50 km run), in
the sedan chair...solves all the problems of the odometer situ, seeing his squeeze, keeping the help
busy, etc.

I believe this is a great question. I doubt that you will get an intelligent answer though..............
