wiper blade replacement - how often

I know this is a difficult question but I have just over 20k KM on the car and my front blades are trashed .. now we get A LOT of rain in Ireland but I would have expected to get more that 20k KM worth of driving out of the blades... at least one full service interval.. this first service looks like it is going to be expensive!!

I guess you missed my point should I be getting longer out of these wipers do some people replace them more or less often?

I usually replace mine in the spring regardless of mileage. The salt used on the roads during winter breaks them down.

Wagner 02-23-2008 08:42 AM

I don't replace them by a 'time' if they go bad, I replace them. A million things can cause the rubber in a wiper to go bad, weather, use, road treatment in the winter....

I replace mine every year regardless. I got 25,000kms from my last ones.

i replace mine yearly

Wiper inserts are one of the parts that should be covered by BMW. Along with brake pads and oil changes. I'm not sure if you have to wait for your annual service or if you can just call in and have them replace those right away, give them a call.

You are in the US; that is a BMWNA program, not applicable outside the US, unless a maintenance package is purchased at additional cost.

I have them changed yearly as part of BMW's free maintenence program. Just tell the SA they're worn and need replacment when I take it in for service. Yearly is about the right interval if you have much exposure to the elements (sun, salt, etc)

Interesting, didn't know it was just BMWNA. Do you guys get free brake pads and oil changes?

Depends where us guys live

In Canada (which according to BMW is not part of North America) we get scheduled service, meaning oil and filter, and inspections I and II. Full maintenance is extra, and covers brakes and clutches. We also don't have extended warranties available to us from BMW, but that is another story.

In the UK, where the OP is from, scheduled maintenance is extra, and full maintenance is extra again. Having said that, many deals by leasing companies, etc, add that maintenance cost into the price up front.

Rubber things are very depends on where do they live. There are too many facts to cause impact, such as temperature, UV, sunlight, chemical solution, dirt on the windshield, O3...etc

In Taiwan, we have a lot of rain also. Unless in very extreme cases, otherwise we replace the wiper blades whenever we feel the need. No
driver here cares about how long do the blades last.

For myself, my daily drive is garage to garage, the car does not expose to
direct sunlight when I don't use it. So, I replace the wiper blades only once 2 and half years or may be 3 years. (I drive about 1.2 K km per year.)

But if you use the wiper blades for only 6 months and cracked, then
probably you need to figure out the reason.

You are thinking of GB; you don't have to float anywhere to get to a part of Ireland that is in the UK. I wondered if anyone was going to pick up on it, but since I heard constantly during three years of living in the UK that I was from America, I figured I would just let it slide.

So, for the OP, let's just say that he is from Europe.
