Pressing "P" while driving??
 

My wife and I were on our first relatively long road trip (2 hours) in the x5 yesterday and I noticed that when I reached for my drink my hand would graze over the gear shift joystick. I noticed that I was actually grazing over the PARK button. So I asked her what she thought would happen if I hit the button at highway speed, or any speed for that matter. She looked in the manuel but couldn't find anything. We decided we didn't want to find out the hard way. Now the whole ride home I had this urge to just hit the button to see what would happen.

I figure its electronic so there must be a speed sensor that wouldn't let it engage or something. Does anyone have any insight so I don't have to go crazy and finally just end up locking up the tranny at 60mph???

If I remember correctly, the car will start braking HARD but you have to hold it in position for that braking to continue.

Also, don't you need to pull it up rather than "hit the button"?

You could look for Kaify's old post on this too. I think he tested it for X5world...

brian, I'm not sure but I think your talking about pulling up the "parking brake" lever. I do remember the sales person telling me I can use that to brake in an emergency. I'm talking about the little "P" button on the top of the joystick. Are we talking about the same thing? Do they do the same thing? Maybe I'm just crazy. No, I'm pretty sure I am. Sorry, you're right. I was talking about the parking brake lever.

Now I'm going to have to research that "P" button sometime...

i think i may have hit the p button once while still rolling and i got a message stating it would not engage.

Presumably the electronics would lock out the "P" mode even if the button is pressed and/or held while the vehicle is in motion.

I once mindlessly pressed the Start/Stop button on the top of the gear lever on my E63 (w/ Keyless Go) while driving and a dashboard warning said that the vehicle must be stopped to stop the engine, so assume the BMW transmission would be similarly intelligent.

im sure the p button would lock out whilst driving but that info on the parking break was very usefull, going to try that out later, very handy to know in an emergency i guess...

Maybe this board's monitors can let Kafy back in so he can try it and report to us.
