What info is in Heads Up Display

Subject line says it all. I'm considering adding the HUD on my soon-to-be-ordered X5 3.0. For those who have it, besides navi arrows and current speed (which is all I can see in the BMW website photos) is any other information displayed in the HUD? What if you're not currently navigating to a destination - does anything replace the arrows? I can't find any information anywhere else. Thanks.

Jim

digital speed , navigation arrows , cruise control (if set) , low fuel ..

The Owner's Manuals are on the home page of X5world. Head-Up Display details start on page 99.

Also shows lane deviation warning symbol if you have that option.

Mi5 03-05-2008 07:56 AM

i wanted it to have as much information as a fighter jet so I can pretend i am flying in a plane hahaha

Even though i have ordered the option, it was more along the lines of something 'cool' because in all honesty unless you have a warning of something going wrong or gone wrong or you are trying to find your way around (ie satnav) the HUD shows very little information - for the price...

i would have really liked it to replicate not only the speed but also RPMs, fuel and temperature etc. My thoughts being that if one is too lazy to cast their eyes to the dash to see their current speed then one is also too lazy to see how much fuel or range or temp etc etc

jimf15e 03-05-2008 09:40 AM

Thanks for the inputs, especially the owner's manual recommendation. I'm an idiot for not cheking there first. Thanks to Mi5 for the opinions, too. I think I'll skip the HUD and go for the premium sound package instead. If it had more info or customability I might have gone for it. The other thing that scares me is windshield replacement. My bad luck has always resulted in at least 1 cracked windshield in each car I've owned, and my wife for some reason always finds a way to follow trucks carrying big loads of pebbles and rocks!

watrob 03-05-2008 09:54 AM

I can't drive a BMW without it now. The best thing is the digital read out of the cruise control speed against your actual speed right in front of you side by side.

Also when a warning comes up you don't have to glance down to see what gone wrong, it tell you on the screen.

X5CA 03-05-2008 12:39 PM

lane deviation ? new option ?

y5choi 03-05-2008 12:47 PM

get it if you can. it tends to be difficult to justify beforehand, but after the fact, it is a no brainer. Totally worth the investment.

sirees01 03-05-2008 02:36 PM

One of the all time Top 3 options IMO.
It states all of the above plus when the temp hits 3C you get a snowflake / warning which I quite like.
Great option have it on my 650i cab & X5 4.8i

theprof 03-05-2008 04:48 PM

Be sure to order the HUD option that lets you get sports scores and stock prices on it!

Seriously, I found the HUD much more useful than I expected.

brian5 03-05-2008 04:53 PM

The ONLY thing I don't like about HUD is that there is no way to display my Valentine 1 arrows on it. That's a mod that I'm waiting for!!!

I highly recommend HUD.

Eurotek Designs does modifications to your mirror to integrate the V1.

We've ordered this option on my wife's 4.8i and I'm just worried that I'll blurt out "Yee ha! Jester's dead!" when I'm behind the wheel... :-)

wb488641 03-06-2008 06:28 AM

I have it. and I love it . It display all the info you need to keep your eye on the road. ( Speed, Criuse Speed, Nav, Warming info. It does take awhile to get use to it.

Once you have it you will never going back to the dashboard for info.

But the windshield replacement would cost about $1000 as I was told. Because it is a double layer glass.

Mi5 03-06-2008 08:28 AM

I feel the Head up Display in the M5 for example is more informative and looks nicer. It tells you what gear your in and also the RPM in graphical form. I asked my service manager if he could program my HUD to look the same but apparently it cannot be done.

There is one option that I would have really liked to be available in the X5 and that is the Night Vision.

jimf15e 03-06-2008 08:38 AM

$1000 for a windshield - that's what I'd be afraid of. I too wish it would have more information. Not that it's in the same league, but the Corvette HUDs have tach, speed, lateral g, fuel, etc. Then you may be getting to the point of being more distracting. I'm an F-15E pilot and HUDs are a godsend - it'd be cool to have one in my car too. Alas, I think I'll pass on it. Now I'm going to read the thread about the Premium HiFi and decide on ordering that... Decisions, decisions.

Not sure what point you're making here. I don't plan to replace my windshield and, with what this car costs, that premium over regular glass (:dunno: $300?) does not seem that it should be a concern.

In 37 years and some 25 new vehicles I have only ever replaced one windscreen and that was 25 years ago.

My insurance cost is only $1,200AUD a year, so if I have to buy a new screen I am still miles ahead.

Mi5 03-06-2008 09:51 AM

i'm having my windscreen replaced at the moment under insurance before I dispose of the car. The cost to do this is AUD$1200 but my policy allows one free replacement each year. A consecutive replacement within the same year will attract a AUD$500 excess.

watrob 03-06-2008 10:02 AM

Hi Mi5,

That's same for me, but I am not sure whether they would let me get away with the screen cost because of the heads up display screen costing more. Have not read the fine print but they may have a $ limit on it.

Mi5 03-06-2008 10:05 AM

yeah i'll have to check my policy when i transfer it to the new car.

I wish I was that lucky. I've had to replace the windshield on each of the 4 cars I've owned - always due to an errant rock or other road debris. But they never cost more than US$300-400, even on my Audi S4 (B6). $1000+ is pretty steep.

Yeah, the HUD in the X5 definitely needs a gun piper and boresight.

:iagree: about the HUD in the M5, but I read somewhere the BMW Night Vision isn't that great. It's more of a thermal vision option and you have to look at the nav display which in my opinion isn't comfortable. I think the MB S class night vision is a lot better, because you see the screen in the dash.

The MBZ S-Class nightvision is awesome!! the bmw nightvision is like old nv technology in comparison.

not that I am replacing my windshield for X5 with HUD , but sh** happened. It happened to my wife car 2 month ago. Just like to let future X5 owner know what will it cost for a windshield replacement. x5 windshield with HUD cannot be REPAIRED. It must be replaced. http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/x...g?d=1180837909

http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/x...g?d=1180837951

It is a double layer windshield specially for HUD. I don't think there is a aftermarket replacement for it. I would take it to the dealer if I need service to the windshield.

A Strike Eagle driver eh? After flying one of those, driving any mortal motor vehicle must be like riding a bicycle...:zoom:

jimf15e 03-07-2008 07:23 PM

Flying is a rush that's for sure. I've been doing it for years and I still love every minute of it - especially those early morning sorties. It's a lot of work but the instantaneous and long term rewards are innumerable. However, I must say I still love getting in the car after a long week, turning up the radio and opening the sunroof. Too bad I have to deal with speed limits on the ground!

I like your use of the term 'driver' - you must work near or with pilots, not everyone knows that's what most military pilots call ourselves. Along with 'nose gunner,' or just plain old 'dumb pilot'.'

I wish my work was around airplanes, would be much more interesting...

I got all my military aviation lingos from my early teen years, when there was a guy in my old neighborhood who was a naval aviator flying F-14s and he and his buddies visiting would regale me with their stories; you can imagine what that was like for a young boy 12-13 years of age!

If memory serves, he was based out of NAS Oceana but not sure which aircraft carriers he'd been deployed on.

Mi5 03-08-2008 11:51 PM

aren't we a bit off topic here ?

NOT COMPARED TO PREMIUM SOUND!!!!!

I wish the normal HUD had a rev counter, but you only get this in M's :(

I say that the premium sound is WAY WAY WAY WAY more worth it. To me that's a no brainer!

Would you rather spend 1,200 bucks on a system that shows you information like speed, cruise control and arrows maybe 4 inches higher than they are normally OR would you rather spend a little more on an excellent sound system and a CD changer (see if you can get the Logic 7 system without the CD changer at a cheaper price... the cost of the changer has gone up and with options like 6FL one CD is more than enough.)
