Okay, I think we have a problem Houston...

Whenever I unlock our E70, either with mine or my wife's key, the auto tailgate will open. Now, mind you, I am not pushing the button for the tailgate. Just the regular unlock button on the fob. The problem deepens when I try and close the tailgate. Then the boot lid closes, latches, and then opens again. This will go on five about 3-4 times, with a increasingly confused look on my face and frustration building. Then, it finally latches and closes.

Last night when I got in to drive home, I started the car (after having repeated the above cycle) and my demon tailgate opens as I am in reverse backing up. It closes and latches after two tries...

Now, after having used this morning, it did it only once. I am very confused, and almost afraid to drive the thing. I am going 100 miles south today for Easter and am locking the doors immediately upon entering the vehicle in hopes that it will exorcise whatever gremlin in messing around with me vehicle.

So, at least our 2nd issue (the first being rusting of the aluminum running boards)...So off to the dealer I go on Monday/Tuesday. This ordinarily wouldn't be that big an issue, but my E60 has two bent front wheels so I can't drive it until Friday when the new wheels are here.

Anyone else have this issue?

Well, glad to hear that I am the only one...lol.

I have a service appt tomorrow and will hopefully figure out where the gremlin is. May be a faulty latch, we will have to see.

i don't have that problem.. could it be a faulty key fob button??

sometimes even a little dirt or getting a little wet can cause a short...

but sine you mentioned it happens with both keyfobs what are the chances both are malfunctioning?

maybe the outside latch button is faulty or theres dirt stuck somewhere and thus keeps sensing an open command...(like when you touch it)

hope they find the source of the problem....let us know how it turns out....

My guess would be the lower tailgate latch is either malfuctioning, or isn't aligned right...If I don't slam the lower tailgate with force, the door will go down, but will open right back up....Maybe try slamming it close, and see if the hatch will remain closed then....

I had a similar issue wih my e46 M...Where the car(ECU/PCM or whtever you would like to call it), thought that the passenger door was being opened, which made the window pull out of it's seal, thus making my alarm go off every five minutes...

You're right that the lower tailgate needs to be closed properly. It has to latch on both sides otherwise the tailgate will open back up. I thought initially that the lower tailgate needed slamming but you press it firmly in the center, you should hear it latch on both left and right sides.

Jason, You may want to check that your lower tailgate is properly shut. Also check that the auto tailgate appears completely closed and latched when you close it.

I know about the issue with the lower hatch being properly shut, found that out within five minutes of picking the car up and tried it to no avail. Thanks for the input though...

Got it back from the dealer today. The latch mechanism on the top half was not properly connecting and holding onto the bottom part. So they had to "realign" the latches. So far no problems...

Interestingly enough, there were BMWNA reps at the 1 series launch event last night when I dropped it off and the GM said he had asked and not heard of anyone else having this issue. So, at least I was finally first at something... :)
