Cracked Headlights

Had my X5 for just 7 months and notice that the headlights are starting to crack. Thinking of taking it back to the dealer and see if it can be replaced, under warranty.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Yep happened to me. Had the dealer replace them no questions. Is it along the bottom?

Qjody 03-23-2008 11:36 PM

Denalio,

Yes, it's at the bottom. I'll bring it in this week, thanks for the update.
Do you know what the cause was? Aren't you worry that it may happen again?

rooster328 03-24-2008 12:15 AM

got a picture? i want to check mine too

here. They started cracking at the bottom, then the lense started to show cracks.

lakai 03-25-2008 08:24 AM

ouch.. I wonder what causes it

irishE70x5 03-25-2008 08:51 AM

Mine did the same I thought it was something I did. I havent replaced it yet!

What can I do? If it happens again I will have them replaced. BTW to change these headlights is at least a full day. Mine took 2 days. Lots of things have to be removed. This is not a simple swap. From the diagrams it looks like 3 simple screws, guess again!

its stone chips hitting the light cover. I have stone guard for headlights and fog lights, Ontario and Alberta winter roads and gravel cannot do harm. Good thing you got it replaced under warrantee.

It's not stone chips or gravel. There was no "pit marks" on the outside of the lenses and the lense was still smooth on the outside. Whatever caused it was from the inside of the housing or bad lense compounding. It was some type of stress cracks from defective manufacturing. This originally happened about a month after I recieved the vehicle. The fact that the major cracks were at the bottom under the lip eliminated the possibility that anything could of hit it and also not damage the paint.

y5choi 03-25-2008 12:41 PM

i think i did see some condensation on the inside of the lights before... may be faulty seal? yeah looking at the photos again, dont think its stone chips; however, i do think the deadlight stone guard is doing something to prevent this from happening.

Hi.

I would like to raise this topic again as I just noticed similiar cracks in both of my headlamps, has anyone else noticed this problem and had there dealer look after it under warranty.

I would also recommend that all E70 owners check there headlights out.

I will post some photos later this week!

Cheers

See my earlier post on this thread. The dealer replaced mine under warranty.

Yep I saw that, thanks .. I called into my dealer and they said there was nothing in there 'PUMA' system that allowed them to replace the headlights under warranty and when I drop it in for its first service in the next couple of weeks they have BMW look at it but as it stands it would not be covered under warranty and it would be considered damage caused by fair wear and tear.

That is why I am 1 looking for other members to check their headlights and 2 to find out how many other members got there headlights replaced under warranty.

Qjody 06-24-2008 11:08 PM

Update:
When I brought the X5 back, the manager took some photos on both sides and had them sent to BMW Canada. A few days later, I received a call to bring the truck back and that BMW would replace both sides under warranty. So far no new craks, cross my fingers.
If anyone is having this issue, I highly recommend that they bring it back ASAP, while it's still under warranty.

Hello Fellow X5 owners! What a great Forum!

I have searched the internet and found this artical about cracked headlights as I have found cracks in my headlights similiar to Denalio's headlights. A friend of mine has also the same cracks. BMW are REFUSING to cover this under my warranty.

Has anyone else had this issue and please check your headlights to see if you have this problem

tomwid 11-19-2008 03:51 PM

I have this same exact problem too. Trying to get the dealer to replace, no luck so far. Anyone else?

Good Luck Get ready for a battle with BMW .. What country are you in.

tomwid 11-20-2008 02:53 PM

I'm in USA, FL. It's rediculous that people in Canada can get this fixed, but no where else?

Can't my service advisor or the BMW engineer look at BMW Canada's PUMA case on this? There's been 2 members both from Canada that got their headlights fixed.

Burns me up and it's making me think we're not all being treated equally.

jpl 11-20-2008 05:25 PM

stop crying poor you, we pay these truck 10,000$ more then you do...so we deserve a bit more service for being s...

rh71 11-20-2008 09:07 PM

^ umm no.

Denalio 11-21-2008 08:55 AM

Dealer told me that this is really an customer service issue between the client and the dealer. There is not an SIB from BMW on this. As a courtesy the dealer can replace through warranty. There is no SIB on the headlight cracking, however, there is one on the headlight fogging. Ask the dealer to replace as a fogged up headlight.

tomwid 11-21-2008 01:05 PM

Thanks for the info Denalio. Dealer down here will do anything to avoid work, which is stupid if you ask me since BMW pays for their labor.

The BMW engineer looked at it and said it was a stone chip, I said how the hell is it a stone chip if the outside is still smooth? That much impact on the bottom of the lens will also chip the bumper, but that part is super smooth too.

I told the engineer about this tread, his comment was that "He doesn't look at anything on the internet". LOL

After I commented on his unwillingness to help a customer, he reluctantly agreed to look at the pictures you posted, but I doubt he actually looked at them. What a bunch of crock these guys are. It makes me not want to get another BMW.

I have the same problem and have reported to the dealer today. They
said they will report this issue to headquarters and see if warranty can
cover the replacement.

My car was brought in 2007/07, 3.0 Si.

Sher KamaL 02-17-2009 11:29 AM

My, my, my, thanks gentleman I'm going to spread the news here & see what cooks up, on the headlights?

I was in a dealship last week and they had 2 second hand X5's in stock with cracks like these in there headlights

peterjaw 02-26-2009 09:33 AM

My dealer just called me that they will replace the whole set of crack front light for me.

Hope all you guys have yours replaced, too.

peterjaw 08-02-2011 03:20 AM

Just want to bring this issue to surface again.
I had both right and left headlight replaced under warranty.
However, my left head light starts to have similar syndrome recently. I know the dealer
won't replace it now.

Those who are still under warranty period, go check your head light and replace it under
warranty (if possible) before it is too late.

Spanky Deluxe 08-02-2011 06:16 AM

Thanks for bumping this, I've been looking at second hand X5s and one I looked at had this (it was still in warranty though). I thought it was due to chips etc but thought it was a little odd since our high mileage X3 doesn't. It put me off the car we were looking at somewhat but now when I look at other cars I'll know what the deal is.
