Problem Entering "New Destination" in SatNav

Anyone have this problem trying to enter a new destination using iDrive:
1) Select Navigation
2) New Destination
3) Enter Address
4) Enter State/Province
5) Here's where the problem starts, first list of States, starting with
"A" comes up, Alaska, Alabama, etc.; turn the selector to move down the list, but It won't go pass Arizona. You are suppose to be able to pull the idrive down or towards you to get the next screen full of states listed, but it won't go pass "Arizona". I have to try and enter the state using the voice command, which works after trying it about a gazillion times!

Real pain!!! Before I take it in to the dealer, won't to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. Curious if this is a bug in the nav software. I appreciate your comments. My truck is an '07 3.0si with the split screen software upgrade when displaying backup camera.

I think you mean that the iDrive knob doesn't turn any further, yes? This happens to me at various points in the various menus. (Such as traffic incidents.) As dumb as it seems, I have to "fight" the knob by turning it about a quarter of an inch past the point it wants to stop.

I believe that iDrive, in its effort to save processing power, loads a list into memory, and then calculates how far the knob can turn. The problem is that there is a flaw in the logic; it calculates only one screen full.

The "pressure" preventing it from turning more is electromagnetic, so it's not a true mechanical part that would break by continuing to turn the knob. Give it a try.

Are you sure there's no alphabet listing ABCD... up top that you scroll left-right for states first letters? I know a few of the 'enter address' menu screens are like this but can't recall if it's the case for the states selection.

BTW, I have never experienced any resistance built into the knob. Maybe because I have an 08 model? Haven't seen that mentioned this year.

Previous poster was right. I just tried in my E90 - you need to hold the idrive knob against the resistance. It will continue to scroll momentarily. Side note-we're on the way back from test driving X5s, and the 08s don't have the same resistance. Software update?

MY08 does not have that problem. I live in NJ and travel to NYC quite often, so selecting NEW YORK state happens quite often for me :)

On the same topic, you can just enter the ZIP code, much faster !!!

as stated previously some of it is memory related... it "reads" ahead then needs time to catch up...

but if you enter a letter it will search and populate..(ie "N" for New York)

i noticed that starting a new destination with a zip code will auto populate most of the fields and speed things up... (start at the bottom of the fill-in screen and work backwards)

Thanks for the Replys....

For state selection, there is no option to select by letter that I can find.
Sometimes you don't have the zipcode, but I'll give that a try as well.
Going past the resistance, yeah it must be magnetic. I'll try and go beyond and see what happens. Can't break it can I?

Don't let the resistance stop you...

JBHorner: You are right! As long as you see a downward pointing arrow, meaning there's more to display, go against the resistance and the scrolling of the states continues. Before, I was afraid to go against the resistance from fear that I would damage the iDrive controller. Thanks
This forum is GREAT!!!
