Noisy cabin - conclusion

I just came back from the dealer, window motors were changed, still loud. Took off the side window deflectors, still loud. I drove 2 other E70s and they were just as loud as mine is. I guess I'll keep the tunes cranked.

I'm very surprised those of you who also went from the E53 to the E70 don't hear a difference. Both my E53s were tight and quiet. I never heard cars whizzing by, road noise etc. It seems like all outside noises are amplified in the E70....Do I have super hearing powers? Oh wait, I'm a woman, we hear EVERYTHING ;)

vinuneuro 03-27-2008 03:05 PM

Strange indeed, but why were the window motors replaced? Those are inside the door.

brian5 03-27-2008 03:06 PM

I didn't have an E53 so I can't compare the E70 to that. I have no wind (or traffic or tire) noise at all.

Only time was this last weekend when I drove a long distance with a cargo box on top but even that was better than I'd previously experienced with cars and SUVs.

They thought that if the motor was weak, the window(s) might not stay up as tight as they should, resulting in it sounding as if the window was open. We then removed the window deflectors to see if possibly they weren't milled correctly, weren't installed correctly or had defective clips. It sounded the same without them on. We discussed replacing the window guides and seals but decided to check out other E70s first and they were as loud as mine.

Did you check the rubber seals that are attached to the doors? I wonder if that is not sealing well enough against the door/s? You might want to see how easy it is to slide a piece of paper through the closed door.

The reason that I'm asking is that I thought the rear right door seal might have had a problem but I only heard it the one time. It has not re-occurred.

cmyX6go 03-27-2008 03:25 PM

I'll check it out but thought it was a mute point after hearing the noise levels in the other two E70s

rh71 03-27-2008 03:27 PM

What did the service guy think of the noise level in comparison with all the cars involved?

Yes, you could be right because you have compared it to two other E70's...

cmyX6go 03-27-2008 03:38 PM

We did all kinds of tests with the other E70s and the results were the same. Sitting at the driveway entrance on route 1 and listening to the traffic go by. Him outside and me inside talking to each other with the windows up, first with the engine off and then with it running. Stereo on and how much you can hear it from outside with the windows closed. You get the idea. He agreed with me that the E53 was quieter and so are the other models. Off the record he thinks that the E70 is not insulated as well as the E53 was in an effort to keep the weight down. If you've ever opened the hood on an E53 and on an E70 you know what I mean.

 I've never felt a hood like one on the E70 before! I thought that I had just received a cheap plastic one that they used for shipping when I first felt it!!

drod 03-27-2008 04:16 PM

i haven't noticed anything unusual... it's pretty quiet... even compared to the old E53..

as for the hood....boy what a difference!!

i had to close it very gently for fear that it would crack or fall apart!!

i think they got too carried away on weight savings...

motordavid 03-27-2008 04:26 PM

They porked out the E70 ...they had to shave some stuff
somewhere, imo. Sorry to read you still have noise, L...
Hey, what does everyone expect from a $70G car?

Keep the tunes up, but not "too" up...most of us Boomers
are deaf as Beethoven, ('cept for moi, ).

I've been researching noise levels compared to my 335i prior to buying. FWIW from Edmunds at 70 mph cruising:

S550: 62 dba
X5: 63.6 dba
335i: 64.2 dba

alexmish 03-27-2008 04:38 PM

I have no problem with the noise... I'll try to pay more attention to it and will let you know.

Monty04 03-27-2008 04:50 PM

It's funny - I find that my E70 (even with RFTs) is much quieter than my E53 ever was.

AzNMpower32 03-27-2008 04:53 PM

They've got to cut costs somewhere folks!

There are many places where the new BMWs don't feel as strong/well-built as their predecessors. The hood on the E70 does seem surprisingly light, somewhat cheap. There was a thread WAYY back here when the E70 first come out, where someone hit some debris and suffered surprising damage.

Humor me Alex and anyone else...Drive with your windows up and no radio. Let me know what you hear.

Thanks all :)

genew 03-27-2008 05:15 PM

E 70 noise....

I am sorry but have to disagree. I have put 100,000 miles on each of the E 53's I have owned ( 2001 and 2004 ) and the E 70 is quiet as can be. The E 53's were noisier.

It called pedestrian friendly ;)

alexmish 03-27-2008 09:14 PM

Mine is quiet ! Just checked - both highway and local roads. I mean I can hear cars going by, but only if I pay attention to it.

Then it might be wax in the ears (and my wife always complains that I dont hear half what she says :)

I agree with you... The E70 is much much more noisy than the E53. When i talked with the dealer about noise issue he told me that the main problem is the runflat tyres...

AzNMpower32 03-27-2008 11:17 PM

The summer RFTs in my mom's 325i are heavy and make an almost-obscene amount of noise. I had my friend again last weekend, and he was like "wow, I can't believe BMW would put on such terrible tires". He remembers how quiet the 3 was when it was on winter non-RFTs. Now it's a constant dull roar that's worst from 60-100km/h. I plan to do some serious cornering to wear out those tires quick!

My stereo is always on and I'm normally solo. I really noticed it when the Boi was in town, we were talking and I turned down the volume. China Man heard it too.

Quicksilver 03-28-2008 11:43 AM

L. Thanks for writing this. Your opinion will affect the way i test drive the new Xs, and the other models I'm considering. Personally this noise issue is something that we looked at previously when shopping a new BMW.

Over and over the wife complained about too much road and outside noise and that drove her to reject the 3 series. It was a factor when we bought the e60 as well as we noticed a more than satisfactory suppression of outside noise level's with it. Of course we opted for regular tires rather than RF"s.

The E53 was test driven over and over again and i knew it was going to to be a different animal and i was prepared for a different driving experience from my previous sedans. Going forward though, i hope BMW will address this with the diesel models as I am considering going that route.

I don't believe the X or the 3 series is going to be my choice though.
The 3 is too small and the new X has provided some doubts as to weather it would be a good choice.

My wish list is the 5 series diesel. But no telling what that's going to hit the pavement in the US.

You can bet my ears will be tuned up for the choices to come.

Thanks again

Maybe you'll get a quiet one Quick. It puzzles me that a few of us agree and others disagree. I'm not sure if acceptable noise level is subjective or there are tight quiet E70s and loud ones out there :dunno:

dkl 03-28-2008 12:02 PM

Everyone's hearing is different. Some are hearing "challenged" in certain frequencies, thus doesn't hear what you're describing ;)

E61Silver 03-28-2008 12:03 PM

I think a lot of the noise is related to the run flat tires; L maybe should look into getting a set of normal tires?

Quicksilver 03-28-2008 12:04 PM

Let's hope not. Hit and miss quality wise in this price range to me is inexcusable.

We are not talking about acceptable noise levels some of us are talking about the difference between the E 53 and E 70. My 70 is much more quiet than my two previous 53's. I am not arguing with you or anyone else I am just stating a fact on the three cars I am comparing. Not saying yours are not rumbling down the road.;) I have had several people ride with me that are not BMW people and they have commented on quiet the cabin was. That's all I can tell you.

cmyX6go 03-28-2008 12:56 PM

I'm not looking for a pissing match. I find it odd that some of us that have had both say their E70 is much quieter. I have also had two E53s and I hear a huge difference between the models. I thought it was just mine until I tested two other E70s yesterday. Therefore either I have supernatural hearing powers or something is amiss. :)

Tango22 03-28-2008 01:07 PM

I have never driven an E53 but, I find the cabin of my new E70 to be extremely quiet. I thought my old ML 320 was quiet and the X5 trumps it. You mentioned Route 1 in your earlier post. Were you at Princeton BMW?

I'm not either!! Just hope your next 70 is as quiet as mine.

Not a lot of noise here. Ha! One question..how many miles on your 70?? I have less than 1000 so I am wondering if you have quite a few miles on your run flats maybe they get real noisy. Mine are same as new and quiet but maybe I am in for an awakening when I get a few. My 4 X-5 sport got real noisy at about 20,000 miles because of cupping. So far so good for the 70. Really like it so far. Fingers crossed.

cmyX6go 03-28-2008 02:22 PM

3600 miles, but it's not the tires I hear, it's everything else. At least Sirius now has Rolling Stones Radio. :)
