08 x5, how many keys/transmission kick

When I picked up the new o8 x5 at the end of Feb. I was given two programmable keys. Last night on the bmwusa.com site: owners/x508/drivers guides, I found a picture showing you'd receive two programmable and one plastic key. So far my SA hasn't called me back to answer if I was supposed to get the 3rd key, (probably still looking under his desk). How many keys did you 08 x5 owners receive? Of course the plastic one wouldn't work in the ignition but would open the door and back storage area. Thanks!

The car is at the dealers today. It has a periodic "bump" or "kick" in the transmission when coming to a slow stop. Several times it's been hard enough that I've thought I've been rear ended. Of course there's no one there. Service said it probably needed a software update. I'm hoping that update will include a fix for the parking brake problem some people have experienced. The update was rumored to be coming in March. I've been remembering to turn off the engine before activating the parking brake, as recommended by some. We'll see.

The plastic key was for 07... not for 2008, so don't expect a call back from you SA.

I believe that was a known problem in the prior verson of the X5, but I was hoping they had fixed it in the 2007/2008 models.

no extra key in the 08 version... just two keyfobs...

congrats on your purchase...post pics soon... and keep us in the loop with any issues and/or developments... (we're always looking forward to hearing what others are doing with their X5s.)

Transmission Kick Issue

I have been fighting this transmission kick issue with my 2008 4.8 since December. My dealer was supposed to perform a software update but ended up just resetting the transmission which did absolutely nothing.

Has anyone who has had this problem found a solution yet? Did a software update actually fix it? I'm starting to think there is something mechanically wrong with the transmission. It has a lot of trouble shifting around gears 1 through 3 when driving slowly (stop and go traffic). The kick is especially bad when the engine is colder so it has been difficult to demonstrate the full extent of the problem to my dealer.

The 2007 750Li does the same thing. A few times, we too, thought we had been hit. It is a very violent feeling. Our dealer said it is just a characterisitc of the X5 and 7 Series with V8 engines and the new transmissions.

What does the plastic key for my '07 do? I'm guessing it will open the doors, but if I remember from the manual, it referred to inserting the plastic key into some special type of fob...?

I have an 08 X5 3.0i. I was having the same periodic low speed "bump" problem in the first 1,000 miles. Fortunately, it did it once while at the dealer. So, they reset the transmission and the problem seems to be pretty much gone. They told me to monitor it and let them know if it reoccurred. We went on a trip right after the reset and put on about 1,000 miles. Sometimes there will be a very small "bump" now but not nearly what it was. I going to keep monitoring it so see if it gets worse. Keep after them. There's no excuse for anyone to say that's just the way it is. Several times, originally, it was so strong that I thought someone had rear-ended me. That can't be acceptable in any car! Good luck.

It's supposed to be the key for the valet. We have it in our 2006 325i, but they took it away in '07. Basically, it's a small plastic key like the old BMW valet keys. But because the new BMWs have a slot for the new fob, you have to put the valet key into a dummy plastic fob adapter that's supposed to be in a holder in the glovebox. Thus, you can insert the adapter fob into the slot, and the car will recognize that it is a valet key inside.

The valet driver would lock and unlock the doors by taking the plastic key out and turning it manually in the door key hole. The adapter fob does not have any buttons, but it is sized similar to the regular master key fob.

Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem, "Penguin" you are right I'm having this same problem with my 04 3.0d model...

Hoping a transmission reset will fix the problem...
