hit pothole in Boston. blew 20" tire.... have a question or two....
 

I just removed my snows and put my 20" tires/wheels back on my car today and on the way home... hit a pothole and instantly the car warned me of a low pressure in the front right tire. I pulled over, and could hear the air escaping and saw the tear.

So, tomorrow i'm going to have to order a new tire... i think they are about $450 each! argh. i wonder if the City of Boston would cover this... anyone have any experience in this area?

I have about 5,000 miles on the tires. Do you think I should replace BOTH fronts... or is it ok to just replace the damaged tire?

I'm going to call about availability in the morning through dealer. Tire Rack says they have them... but i need to get it replaced ASAP.

Sorry to hear that... How large was the pothole ?

Runflats? How'd it hold up for you after? All its cracked up to be?

If you're replacing it with another brand, you should change the rest similarly, otherwise if it's the same tire "model", there's no reason to change the other one too.

I'm glad I'm getting rid of the runflats to be honest... too pricey to exchange 1 tire for any small problem.

yes, it's the OEM run flat tires (dunlop sport maxx). there is no air in the tire but i was able to drive away about 1/5 mile to get home. the tire made funny noises while driving... so i went slow, just in case. it seemed to hold up... but it 'sounds' like it's flat. i'm not sure how it would feel on the highway...

the pothole was a pretty descent size... but i watched other cars go through it without issues... these low profile tires are partly the problem i guess... but for some reason, i feel like my old 19" Michelin Diamaris tires on my old 4.4 were stronger than these 20" tires on the 4.8... but that might be 'psychological'.

Ouch ! expensive pothole.

From an insurance standpoint, pothole damage is covered under collision coverage, but it's subject to standard deductibles, said Daniel Johnston, executive director of the Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts.
"Since most of the time the damage that you get is to a tire or rim, usually the cost of that doesn't rise above the deductible, which is usually $300, $500 or $1,000," he said. "So, technically, while there may be coverage, as a practical matter there's very rarely a claim."
If you hit a pothole on a state-maintained road, well, you're out of luck again. According to a century-old state law, the "Road Defect Statute," the Commonwealth is not liable for any car damage sustained on its roads. (The state allows claims only for personal injuries.)
Local roads are different, though. According to a different statute, "Personal injuries or property damage from defective ways" (Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 84, Section 15), cities and towns must properly maintain their public ways. If they don't, you could seek property damages of up to $5,000.
Boston has a four-page form, which you fill out at the city clerk's office for a fee of $5, that asks for a detailed description of the accident and repair estimates.

Did you purchase the tire and wheel insurance from the dealer?
if so, you are covered. otherwise you are SOL.
you shouldn't have to replace both tires. just the damage one.
Did the 214 rims Bend? You may also look into an alightment depend on how severe the damage is done to your front end.

The oem 20' is a low profile tires, so the 19' even the 18' are able to substain more punishment then your 20'

The oem dunlop is a very expensive tires, $450 plus labor. you are probably looking into a $500 or more depends on your dealer.

Sorry to hear about your tire, just wonder how the rim was after the impact, I had a cracked rim and BMW reckoned I hit a pothole (or something similiar) which caused the crack

i don't know how the rim is yet.... they haven't taken off the tire. BMW dealer wants $497 for tire plus $90 to mount/balance. that seems nuts.

tire rack is $423... but if i want it done today, i guess i don't have much choice.
