Navigation Split Screen

Does anyone know how you can change the navigation screen to be full screen instead of the split screen (having the assistance screen) for the E70?

jeffnin 04-09-2008 11:50 AM

No way to do it. Kinda sucks, but that's how it was designed.

raskal83 04-09-2008 11:57 AM

when I first got the car it was full screen unless I put the assistance window on, then I went in cause the car was having problems with the radio and they had to update the whole electrical system. Now it does seem like the assistance window has to be up all the time. Is this due to the new OS they put in for the E70s?

No, shouldn't be. What happens when you click on it (push down on iDrive)? Isn't there the option to remove it any more?

the assistance window is on all the time unless you turn it off which leaves a black space in its place. there is always a space designated for the assistance window. I want a full screen when the entertainment or other main windows are being used. I personally don't like the assistance window.

This is true. When I first got the car, I remember seeing the full screen then the salesperson changed it to show the assistance window. I never bothered to ask if I can change it back to a full screen since the assistance screen is very valuable to me.

My '08 X5 3.0Si allowed me to program it thru the iDrive by push the knob to the passenger side at the setup screen.

It let's you change the appearance of the assistance screen i.e turn it off, change the map options, etc., but can you actually make the main screen from the left be full view and not have the assistance window up at all.

DawgBone 04-09-2008 03:36 PM

I've tried to find it as well...I do remember the sales guy running me through IDrive and had me to change it to split screen...

I sure would like to get it back to full screen...

I want full screen too .. hope you are reading this BMW !

pokemon 04-09-2008 07:12 PM

Yes. When I have the Nav turned on, it can either show full map display or with the the 1/3 assistance screen on the right. The small screen display the distance, name of the roads and when to turn etc.

pokemon 04-09-2008 07:31 PM

Yes. After I turned on the map (Full screen), then push the knob to the right (passenger side) to turn on the assistance screen on the right side. Same procedure applies to the rear view camera to turn on the front & rear parking assist display as well.

drod 04-09-2008 07:51 PM

i concur... full screen works!

but i like the assistance window...

i usually have my ipod music list view and a nav screen on the assistance windows (select "map direction of travel")

when i'm using the NAV alone i use the assistance window to show "arrow with direction of travel" which also counts down distance to next turn as well as name of street or highway exit number...

pretty helpful...

I am sorry to tell you the wrong information about the split screen issue for the NAV display, it can't be done, please accept my apology.

Can you give the step by step directions. It seems like myself and others are having trouble navigating the iDrive so that it shows the '2/3 window' to become full-screen all the time. I know that I can turn the assistance window '1/3 screen' on and off, but cannot take it completely away and allow for the driver side '2/3' screen to become full screen. My assistance window comes up upon starting the car and will stay there. It is never full screen.

pokemon 04-09-2008 09:41 PM

You are right, it can't be done. Please accept my apology.

pokemon 04-09-2008 09:45 PM

I can turn the assistance screen off but only has 2/3 of the screen showing, the other 1/3 will black out.

drod 04-09-2008 10:51 PM

i just checked... seems full screen is only possible on camera backup..and not NAV.. (or i just couldn't find the right settings section)

but definitely full screen on camera backup...

yeah, the only time the screen is full screen is with the rear camera. All the other scenerios i.e. entertainment, NAV, etc. is 2/3. Thanks for the help guys and hoping that BMW gives this option in the future or reverses it because I remember it was possible when I first got my vehicle.

Doh!!! They forgot to include the code to turn it back to full screen:banghead: :throw:

I bet a couple of emails to BMW about it would encourage them to include a fix in the next software update...That is, of course, if it isn't by design.

deutsch100 04-11-2008 12:47 AM

Mine too will NOT do full screen with the Navigation/map. I either have 2 sizes of the identical map, the map and some random information I don't need, or the option of having an ugly blacked out box.

Our 2007 750Li has full screen, as did my 2005 M3 and all 3 of our 2004 X5s. I personally hate the split screen.

GPSnV1 05-08-2008 10:04 AM

Could someone update me on where this is going about the split screen?
I have a 2004 4.4i sport X5 and test drove a 2008 yesterday. Previously I have gone with a Garmin unit (2720) mainly because the maps have some incredible details but also because the announcements are (usually) accurate and include information I want (which often means a street name). I drive two long trips in places not known to me and so I want to hear instructions and not have to look down at the map itself unless I'm going under 90 mph.
However, while I like the portable unit since it comes in handy with rental cars, I am at a point where I would like a factor unit if BMW has improved their software and maps.

Not entirely sure what you are saying...But the split screen is just a preference thing. I prefer to not have split screen. We all remember the dealer telling/making us change the option to split screen during the run down of the truck, but we are all finding out later on, that there is no way to change it back to single screen mode. At least, that's my experience with it...

I can't say for sure that I like the interface....But so far the navigation and voice guidance has been stellar IMO... You can crank the voice guidance up as much as you like...Which brings up the only dislike I have with the voice....To change the volume of the voice guidance, you have to wait for it to say something. There is no menu(that I could find) to pre-determine the volume...You have to wait for it to say something, then raise/lower it with the steering wheel's volume control..

My only other complaint, is that I have yet to figure out how to do a POI or a vicinity search...I've fallen in love with these features of my Pioneer Avic Z2, in which can all be done by voice command....I can tell it....POI search, or Vicinity search....Say Walmart...and dependant on what kind of city/town I'm in, it will usually come up with something...select it, and say set as destination...

Idrive main screen --> Navigation --> Information tab (across the top to the right).

As you saying that if you don't split the screen at first then the GPS will always be full screen when it is active?
No POI search?
Can you save a destination once it has been entered? Garmin would call this a "favorite".
I'm still concerned about maps of small cities, saying like Falcon, NC.

DawgBone 05-08-2008 12:45 PM

I never saw that GPS in full screen as mine was on the showroom floor where it couldn't get signal. It was also one of the very first things the salesman touched on during the run though.

I haven't figured out the POI search. If there even is one. I'll have to check that out later this evening. This past weekend, a good frind of mine was in a bad accident and rushed to a remote Hospital in the inner-city. I tried for a whole 5 minutes to figure out how to find Tulane Hospital via the GPS, but got frustrated and turned to my Iphone's Google Maps to find it. My Pioneer is stupid easy to use, in comparison. Probably nothng that reading the maual wouldn't help with.

You can save destinations. And they are easy to get to, non like finding the POI search....

It's very good with small roads in small cities/towns, in which I live in...
