Do 20's look too aggressive?
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the look of the 20's. But I'm a little concerned that they may look a little too "in your face", thus sending the wrong message to non-car people (like some of my clients and colleagues) that may frown on the BMW badge to begin with - (i.e. look at that thing, who the hell does he think he is??!!??). I know I shouldn't worry about it but its' in the back of my mind as I get closer to placing my order.

They do attract attention, if that's what you want to know. But it all depends. You already bought a BMW, so that's the first attention factor.
|
The answer for you is yes. :D
|
The exterior design of most newer BMWs attract attention. You can thank Bangle and his horde for that. The 20" do stand out, but given the X5 is already a big SUV that attracts attention, it's like adding a match to a bonfire.
See, back in the good ol' days, when BMW was still a sensible company, their designs were more conservative without being boring, and didn't attract unwanted attention. |
I think the X5 looks best with the 20's. Sure, it's different to most of the X5's that you'll see in CT, but that's what I want in the summer months. The 20's do look more aggressive than the 18" or 19" but if one wants a SUV that blends in, then there's many of those to choose from...
|
They look agressive, but no too agressive if you ask me. I think 19's look really good and 20's look just about perfect. If you stick with OEM wheels they will look agressive and classy. 21's start to push the limits IMO.
You are already driving an X5, you are not going to hide it by driving on smaller wheels. |
21's look really nice.
Get the 20"s. I actually prefer the ride with the wider 20" than the 18s or the 19s. If others judge you for that, tell them that handling is improved with the 20"s. Most people don't even realize that the 20" are optional features. they just assume that bimmers naturally have dubs on (especially if they are naive enough to judge you based on the size of your rims ) ;) ;) ;) P.s. My motto - Do the best, forget the rest. |
I finally got my 20s on (pics later) and they look very aggressive in person. Pics are one thing but standing next to them... it's hard to believe it's indeed a BMW option.

20s are WAY too much, they drop performance, are difficult to maintain (watch for the road surface), and usually look like crap

Who cares if your colleagues/clients can't appreciate a sweet looking ride. I work in a pretty "stodgy" industry, and most of my colleagues drive Camrys and Civics, even though they can afford much nicer looking cars. But that doesn't mean I have to be "one of them" Anyway, could be worse, you could show up in a Lamborghini Murcielago. Now that would give them cardiac arrest...:thud: :thud: :thud: |
After some miles on my 214s with Toyo non-RFTs (coming from Michelin 19 RFTs), the ride is noticeably softer. Going over bumps (normal and sport mode) feels like a normal car again rather than a big THUMP I both heard and felt. I can't say for sure it's more agile but the wider footprint does make it a slightly heavier at street-corner turns - slightly. Road noise to me is non-existant right now, just like it was with the RFTs. All in all going away from RFTs is well worth the softer ride in my opinion.
|
yeah my 214's look terrible...
i see what you mean about your clients seeing your car but do what i do ...dont take the x5 at all.... i have a daily drive for work and the x5 for evenings and weekends  http://img2.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/44a53fe7a2.jpg |
20s make it unique from the stock 18s or 19s. unique, not aggressive
|
40-44psi... that's how much the guy set my new 20s at. Is that entirely too much? I know recommended is 32-35psi. Max on the tires is 44r/50f.
Think he did it because it's lower profile? Because they're new? Any other reasons? |
