Cooled front windshield glass/Thermal glass
 

I'm having the exact same problem on my 4.8i, as in the 750Li. When the temperature goes above 80F (27C), or even if it is somewhat cool outside, yet the car is parked in the sun, or driving in direct, strong sunlight...there is an enormous amount of heat generated around/behind the front windshield/screen glass. It is like being in a greenhouse.

I called my dealership yesterday and complained, and they asked for my VIN#. They called me back, and informed me that I do not have option code "355", which is front thermal/cooled glass. WTF? It's not even on the BMW website, for Build Your Own...nor is it in the borchure for both the 2007 and 2008 X5.

Does anyone know what this is, and can we have the windscreen changed? Those who must endure hot summers, will know what I am talking about. The radiated heat is unbearable.

Thanks! I don't have the head up display. I do, as I think all E70s, have rain sensing wipers. Is this special glass, able to be added?

358. Is that even on option in the USA? Can't seem to find it on the BMWNA website, or in any brochures.

I can't tell you for USA.
For sure, you may change you windscreen with the Climate Comfort Screen but it will cost you a lot.
If you have a good insurance coverage, maybe you can wait for (or provoque it...) an impact on your screen and have it changed with the other model which costs more.

Never even heard of the option.

If you don't want to go through all of that trouble, you can always just buy a folding window shade and use it when you park outside. It will also help protect the dash from fading and keep the steering wheel from burning your hands. Just a thought.

US models come standard, and are only available with 3AP: Gray Band front windscreen (known as the Grad tint windscreen for the UK). The HUD replaces the Gray band windscreen because it cannot be combined. I believe that ordering HUD brings it back to the standard windscreen.

I'm not aware of any addtional windshield options for the X5. 358 is listed as "Infrared Reflecting glass". I did a search of thru the various model configurators. The 7-series has 358 (Kilmakomfort- Frontscheibe) available.

I suggest using the vent function of the panorama moonroof (if equipped) whenever possible to keep the interior from becoming an oven. There's also parked car ventilation settings in iDrive I believe.

I plan on getting the BMW sunshade cover for the windshield. I have this for the M3 and the M5 and it really works, better than any tint. I also vent the sunroof as well to expunge the heat.

Even in direct sunlight in the summer, it keeps the interior bearable, and the leather cool.

Thanks, but the main problem is while driving. Of course, I use a folding BMW window shade while parked. When the temps are high (80F+) the heat generated behind the windscreen are actually intense, and the A/C does nothing in that area to cool it off.

I know MBZ and Lexus almost always use Thermal glass in the windshield. It amazes me, that BMW wouldn't just make this standard for every model, considering every model they sell in the US is $35,000+.

Well my dealer, Century West BMW, ran my VIN#, and confirmed that the Heat reflecting glass is NOT standard, and according to my VIN, my car does NOT have it. I would think with all my options, it would be standard equipment.
