If it was me I would lease, if resale value is high you buy at the residual value.

I thought X5 was going to get the 3.0SD, not the D?

Do we know what the pricing will be?

It will be the SD (twin turbo diesel). I understand but have not confirmed the the twin turbo 6 cylinder gas engine will be released as well. It will be interesting to see how well they both perform.

Curious where you're seeing any information about the twin turbo gas motor coming to the US, because I've searched high and low and can't find a shred of information about that. I've got a Volvo XC90 lease expiring in June and need to pull the trigger on something soon - I would be extremely pi$$ed off if I bought an '08 3.0si only to find out that the TT gas motor became standard a couple months later.

Is there any CREDIBLE infromation available on the potential for the TT gas motor coming to the US?

My dealer told me that the twin turbo V6 from the X6 would be made available for the U.S. X5 starting in November 2009. Is my BMW dealer credible? No, not really, but maybe he's right about this rumor.

Somehow I strongly believe that we will see the following in Novenmber this year.
1. TTI6 Diesel in X5 as well as the single stage diesel I6.
2. TT I6 Petrol in the X5 to replace the 3.0 NA I6
3. TT V8 Petrol in the X5 to replace the 4.8 NA V8

The timing of the diesel has really killed me. I wanted to wait for the 3.0d, but the lease was up on my 4.4, and I got a smokin' deal on a leftover 2007 4.8, but my wife is getting 15mpg in the new beast. Now I'm looking for a luxury SUV to replace my M3 lease, and I'm not going to get another fuel pig. Where has that led me?

The answer will make the BMW brass cringe.... after 20 years of driving BMWs exclusively, I'm about to place an order for a 2009 Mercedes GL 320 CDI.

My salesman wants me to wait for the diesel X6, but I swear we won't see it until 2009.

Well, if your dealer thinks there's a V6 in the X6, that indicates a bit of a credibility problem right off the bat...;)

Well, BMW has announced the twin turbo diesel in the X5 for the fall of '08, so that one is clear. I can't see why they would even consider bringing in the single turbo diesel, given the cost of emissions certification testing. They will come into the market with a single diesel model, testing the waters very carefully for consumer acceptance, as they bring their dealer network up to speed to be able to support it. Their thinking is revealed by looking at the announcement of the 335d; they didn't announce a 320d, or 330d, just a 335d. Same engine as the X5, less certification cost. Remember that this diesel isn't the same identical engine as the 3.0tt diesel in the rest of the world, due to the tougher emissions regulations. It will have slightly less hp, and additional hardware to maintain.

We certainly may see the gasoline twin turbo engines, but it will take BMW several years to work them into all models. I would think it more likely that the 3.0tt and 4.4tt gasoline engines will be a mid-year release, early in 2009.

I suspect you might end up with the converse in the US, because a lot of people are going to be wary of Diesel as everyone is used to petrol - so you might find it harder to re-sell.

On the other hand it might turn out to be the best decision you ever made, none of us can forecast the future accurately.

What is the price difference between 4.8 and diesel in Uk

The 4.8 is about £8k more expensive than the twin turbo diesel and £10k more expensive than the single turbo diesel.

Incidentally the 4.8 is £10.5k more expensive than the 3.0 petrol too.
