Hitch install & ECM reprogram 2007 X5 3.0

I'll be installing this same Curt hitch this coming weekend, seems pretty simple. My concern is the wiring. I ordered the hardwire kit #118176KIT from etrailer and feel confident that I can do this myself, having installed them on a previous Jeep Grand Cherokee and Acura MDX. I'm a little concerned with the ECM re-program and have a few questions. Where does the error message display (idrive) and can you clear it while driving until the next start up? Does it affect the operation of the vehicle? How much will the BMW dealer rape me for the reprogram? Thanks for your help.

The Curt looks a little different than the drawtite/hidden hitch (those two look identical).

Doodle - please do post pictures once your Curt is installed. What year is your X?

I will post pictures after this weekend. I'm still skeptical of the wiring and may hold off on this since the main reasoning for the hitch is a bike rack and basket. My X is an 07 3.0.

I installed my Hidden Hitch Friday night. The bumper cover DID need to be cut for it to fit. But, luckily, nowhere near as much as cutting is needed with the BMW hitch. You can only see the cutting from the ground. You can't tell by looking at the rear of the vehicle.

One thing, I didn't install the new plastic rivets b/c I haven't installed the wiring harness yet. Will I need to remove the bumper cover to install the BMW wiring harness? If not, I'll install the new rivets.

I have more pics with the bumper cover off, but I haven't uploaded them yet. Here it is doing some work.

Do not recall seeing you because i live in marietta as well and race novice. but i am happy you found a solution. if the wiring harness is not connected how are you able to tow ur trailer? if this an 06' x5 their is no cutting because of pre exsisting hole as is the case with my X5. Nice honda

My bumper cover was still off when I wired the harness, so it made it a little easier to run the wires, but you could probably still run the wires with it installed.

Not to beat a dead horse but -

The 2007 and 2008 hitch and wiring harness are the same.
I have installed a BMW hitch on both years.

Hitch plus trim piece plus programming $525 U.S.

I agree that the non BMW hitch looks better but you still need to remove the rear facia. I have posted the procedure earlier.

I understand all that. I was asking will I need to remove the bumper cover again to do the wiring?

We've only had the X5 for about a month. And I guess I didn't do everything legally that day I pulled the trailer.

I'm in E. Cobb. Where are you in Marietta?

You can try to pull down the heat deflection material to see if you have enough access. This may be more trouble than removing the rear facia(bumper cover).

I did the complete procedure(hitch and wiring) as one operation.
