Reset Engine Light- regular fuel

Regular fuel has turned on my Engine light...how do I turn it off?

:D Not trying to be a wise acre but try burning premium!

X5FX 05-26-2008 07:24 PM

no shit...an employee filled it up for me. I have run 2 refills of premium since and it wont reset.

genew 05-26-2008 07:43 PM

on my old e 53 it would reset by itself. one time I didn't get the gas cap sealed tight and the light came on. I checked the cap and tightened it and it went out after awhile. maybe the 70's have to be reset manually.

It takes a while, since the sensors have to measure at least 5 times (i dunno when) to clear the codes. Give it a week.

What ties the engine light to the regular fuel? There is no octane sensor in the engine management system.

It could be bad fuel (much lower than 87, water, etc), or a loose gas cap, but simply using regular has no direct linkage with the engine light coming on.

I think it is more likely that the person who filled it up did so with the engine running - which triggered the check engine light. As others have said, if it doesn't reset after another tank, you probably need to bring it in.

I'm with JCL and wch above...the reg gas itself, did not set off the CEL.

Perhaps it's not wise to let an employee fill up your gas tank, unless you really trust him/her. You never know what could go in the tank other than gas.

It was probably the knock sensors that threw a code. If the engine senses knocks, the DME retards timing until the knocks cease. But in this case, if running regular gas, the DME probably retarded timing enough to throw a code.

You'll probably have to go to the dealer to reset the code, as this is something that doesn't reset itself, unlike the gas cap.
