Has anyone replaced their Xenon bulbs?

I'm changing my bulbs to a different output, and was wondering if anyone has done the same. If so, what output are you at now? And what kind of tool do I need to remove the screws holding the headlights in tact?

Do you mean you want to change your HID bulb to a different temp ?

Krunk Man 06-19-2008 06:22 PM

I did 6000k, looks much better, no noticable loss of output. Basic tools to do the switch.

Quicksilver 06-19-2008 07:28 PM

Care to elaborate or provide the link for the install?

Most of your interior bulbs will swap out with a flat head screw driver. This is what we use for our Interior Xenon Bulb kits and it's a straight forward swap.

Quicksilver 06-19-2008 07:33 PM

So you're saying a cave man could do it? LOL

Nick@Jlevi SW 06-20-2008 12:45 PM

Hehe definitely.

Make sure you know what you are doing!
Read this article: http://www.intellexual.net/hid.html#miscon and you will understand much more what the different HID colour temperatures means.
Higher is not better, it is actually less light than the 4300K light that is standard in BMW!

Another recource regarding HID: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...dvantages.html

Quicksilver 06-20-2008 07:42 PM

Really about perception correct?
If it looks brighter it may not be
but it looks like it is.

EX5TASY 07-29-2008 05:29 PM

I wasn't talking about the interior bulbs, but the headlights. Anyone have any suggestions?

y5choi 07-29-2008 07:45 PM

no higher K values mean they are close to blue/ purple and the light scatters more than it casts or throws in one direction; means less visibility for the road ahead and lots of angry drivers seeing annoying blue lights when coming from the other direction

I posted a temp chart in another thread ..

No, remove the "bulb" or capsule just like you would a regular bulb. I believe it twists out. You ned to make sure the conectors are the same.

I dont know what year X you have but I have a 2001 and I've replaced the headlights with 6000k bulbs and retrofitted the fog lights with a 6000k fog light bulb kit.

They came out great but I havent taken pictures yet. On my car, I was installing angel eyes simultaneously so the headlight units were out already but I'd imagine given the small space to work with, yes, you need to take the headlight units out to change the bulbs. I know you definitely need to remove them to change the turn signals. There are star point screws that hold a weathertight shroud over the xenon bulb so no moisture gets in there.

As for necessary tools, there is a diy post on the homepage on how to change your turn signals. You can follow that to get the bulbs out (if you happen to have the same setup as me, of course). The only tool I definitely could NOT have done without when I did my swap was the wobble head extension because its next to impossible to remove the screws from the front bottom of the headlight without one. Even with it, you run the risk of dropping the screws down into the bumper.

Good luck.

PS I got both as a package on ebay from seller fishcake321 for about $200.

A

The e70 must be different. I had my headlamp assemblies replace under warranty and it took two days and they had to remove the bumper, fan and shroud and a pump amongst other parts.

Quicksilver 07-30-2008 05:06 PM

I believe the OP was talking about replace bulbs not entire headlamp assemblies.

EX5TASY 07-31-2008 06:43 PM

yes, i was talking about replacing the bulbs. this is on an E70, and there doesn't seem to be much room at all to fit your hand in there and successfully take anything apart. so i'm guessing the easiest way would be to remove the entire assembly from the car? anybody know what kind of tools i would need or what else this might entail?

jamesboags 07-31-2008 06:50 PM

I have a suggestion.. change the Angel eyes and the fogs but leave the rest alone !!!:p:

bsk997 01-06-2009 12:55 AM

Could anybody else that's done the HID bulb replacement on an E70 post how they did it?
I just got an e70 and want to change both HID bubl, angel eye and Fog lights.
Thanks!

Shinchan 01-06-2009 02:27 PM

the key to retain same amount of brightness is quality D1S bulb. I replace my 335i with OSRAM SYLVANIA- Xenarc 6000K and was very happy with it.

When i get my car in 6 weeks.... i will take a look on the bulb swap. I don't think it require u to take off fender... etc... Most likely as E92.. need to go through the wheel wall...

LOL.
I took a look at the housing for the lights and some instructions from max5(thanks btw!) last night and the angel eyes seem fairly easy to change. They are enclosed in a housing with a round cover on it that you just twist to access.
The Xenon lights have a cover on it as well with a tab that you press down and pull out. It's a real tight fit with the plastic guards right on top. The passenger side seems like it'll be even tighter since there's a black box right behind the xenon covers.
The fog lights seem fairly easy to get to once you pull off the covers right below the fog lights.
All this is in theory as I have not actually done it yet. lol :)

If anybody in socal that has done this on an e70 and wants to help me out, let me know. ;)

8ball 01-07-2009 10:05 PM

You shouldn't have any problems, you sound like you know how to do it. If I did it I'm sure you can. I got the PIAA LED's for the angel eye's, they look great, they also have the fog's too but didn't use them since I had already bought some; can't remember the brand other than it starting with a B but they match pretty good. Here is a thread that might help you out.
