Another new E70 owner

Thought I would say Hi

Joined the E70 ‘club’ last week. Got to say – what a car! Very glad I held off buying the E53 a while back as I much prefer the look of the E70 and the technology of the beast is just amazing.

My car’s (UK) specification is:
Titanium Silver 3.0d SE
Black Nevada Leather
Dynamic Package
Ext. folding auto dim mirrors
Media Package
Running Boards
Seat heating, front
Sun protection glass
Xenons
Style 214 wheels

What I love about this car:
Great ride

Xenons & the daytime driving lights
Storage compartment lockable in the rear
Massive wheels
Fly by wire controls
MP3 capability on the CD changer

What I think can improve:
What no torch? My E46 had one, cannot find one on the E70.
Option to auto-fold the external mirrors on locking.

Great forum and bunch of contributors! I particularly value the reference documents and manuals.

Cheers,

Simon

Wilkommen. Congratulations.

You guys in the UK are SO lucky that UV/Thermal protection glass is an option. I find it funny (and bizarre) that in the UK, this heat resistance glass is offered, but here in the USA it's not. While, you guys in the UK might consider 80F (26C) a hot day.. where I am here in California we've had on and off 105F (41.5C) for a few weeks. There are SO many states in the USA that has this kind of hot weather, but rainy, gray old England gets UV protection glass :dunno:

Any way, Congrats and Freude am Fahren!!

Another Newbie

Hi SilverSi
many congrats on the car - must admit I only joined the club last Saturday when I picked my E70 spec:

3.0 SD - Black Sapphire
Dynamic Pack (20" wheels)
Media Pack
Sunroof
Third Row Seating
Heated seats
Sun protection glass & rear blinds
USB
Folding Mirrors
Running Boards
Heads Up Display
Xenons

Love the car - but the economy (still early days - and being in stop start traffic) was not good.
Your right no torch - I think BMW started pulling these out (no pun intended) 2007, hence no contacts where the torch should go.

Yes your right those mirrors do not fold in when you hold the lock button - although this may be a programming thing (I have been told BMW Service depts can program that key to do anything and everything on the car), you could do this on my E90 3 series!

The drive and engine noise is nice.
Parking the thing is a thing to get used to, conscious of those alloys and the low profile tyres
The cost of a punctured run flats on the X5 is scary as well - as I had several on my old E90, they were only 18" tyres and they hurt

Hope you enjoy your new ride!!!!

deutsch - thanks for your comments. We have now had our alloted 2 days of summer; back to grey, rainy days.
davwan - nice spec. I assume your's is the twin turbo SD? Did you decide on this car by spec or for the extra power? Is the difference noticeable against the single turbo derv burner?
Fuel consumption is certainly a concern with these. I have averaged 28.8 mpg over the last week on 50% motorway miles. Started to turn off the air-con for those 2 extra mpgs. Come on Mr. Brown, fix the fuel price problems!
Not looking forwards to changing the tyres - £250 front, £350 back price range for direct replacements. Sure a little hunting around and taking advice on the forum will find a better option/deal when the time comes. Parking is getting easier, I find you can see the side of the car clearly in the external mirrors and the parking sensors work well.

Amazingly silver is rare on the X5. Congrats.

Good news I hope for resale! Space Grey seems to be the current UK favourite. It was a tough decision between the two. Having the lower emission engine on my car made the decision. I bought it at 4 months old, all the other cars at the dealer had the pre-08 engine and thus the potential for £450 tax/yr.

SilverSi
I'm a power freak - the SD was the engine in my opinion, as I had an 3.0d E90, so fully aware of what that engine could do (GREAT engine) but I wanted that little iddy biddy extra turbo charger :)
Not really opened the car up as yet, still playing it by ear and being careful, although the weekend may change this as the motorways are all involved!!!
At normal running speeds no real difference, it does make a nicer engine growl then the E90 but honestly I won't know till I really go nuts with it.

How are you breaking yours in?

Air con on air con off, was doing that last Saturday as I was stuck in London traffic. I was a little horrifed with the mpg counter touching 19mpg.......but this was all start stop.
Must also admit though the X5 heats up like an oven without the air con on - whew!!!!

Mine came 4 months old with 4K miles so I just hope the BMW Manager who drove the car was kind. I guess they are told to be very careful because they know that the car will be resold 'as new'. Overall - very happy after 10 days of ownership.

I thought about adding the rear blinds. Have you found them useful so far?

I envy you - your car is fully broken in, enjoy!!!!
Will take me ages - or alternatively I could say stuff it and floor it tonight :)

The blind and the protection glass were bought primarily for the little one, she hasn't complained yet, so I guess it does the job!!!
They are nicely integrated into the door and pull up and down and clip to fixed clips at the top of the window frame. They are miles better then the Mama & Papa suction ones, but the price difference is huge :(
