DVD Video While in Motion!

I'm sure this has been discussed on here before, but I'm having a unit installed on Thursday for $500 that will allow the DVD video to play on the front NAV screen while the car is in motion. If anyone is interested in knowing what was done and what the part is, I'd be happy to share info when it's done.

Hope you're not driving in my area ;)

I don't think that this a good thing -- there are so many distractions already...

I wouldn't spend the money for this either. I've watched part of a DVD on that little screen (obviously, while parked) and it was VERY poor resolution/quality to watch in daylight (and there was no sunlight directly on the screen).

Maybe he wants it for his front passenger :dunno:

Just as we have a rear seat entertainment system for the kids, the front one is for my wife.

Hey jeudowe I'm interested knowing what was done. Please share, Thanks!

Just FYI. My main point was that you can get MUCH better portable DVD solutions (larger screen, far better resolution, more functionality, etc.) for less than $200. And you can use Navigation and iDrive while the passenger is viewing it... You could get two excellent portable DVD players for you and your wife to watch for $500.

It'll be done on Thursday and I'll post exactly what was done and what was involved re: parts, costs, etc.

As for buying a second dvd player, yes, obviously I can balance a portable dvd player on the dash board, but after spending 70k on a car - that's not really what I want to have to do. I like everything integrated and factory looking. The ability to load 6 movies and simply select DVD while we're on a long trip is well worth it. Not Thursday, but they're also adding two headrest monitors for the back which will be integrated into the system so I can control everything for the kids via the idrive.

Again, I'll post all of the specs and info on Thursday night or Friday.

It sounds like a very cool mod!! But IMO unless you take a lot of long trips with your family, a DVD player is pointless. Then again it's always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. :D

That sounds like someone who doesn't have little children! I have two little ones and the need for a DVD player for drives as long as 1/2 mile are well worth the investment! :D

I had a similar system in an Audi Q7 I had. They installed a DVD changer in the trunk with a repeater eye up front. I had two headrest monitors with a remote up front. It worked perfectly. Although this will even be better since everything will be controlled through the idrive and not even need a remote.

I'm more interested in the headrest dvd players... thought that wasn't possible anymore with the active headrests now. Would like details when you can.

So, it's done. Awesome. I'll get the name of the part they used, but now the video works exactly as if the car was in park. It pauses the movie when the phone rings, puts on the rear camera when the car is put into reverse and works perfectly. Picture quality is fantastic, sound is awesome. It's exactly what I wanted.

The work was done at Performance Outfitters in Stamford, Connecticut.

Does anyone want me to get the actual part names they used?

The cost was $550 for the part and $150 for installation.

piaabro210 07-11-2008 09:58 AM

jeudowe, please do share. i'm intersted in performing similiar mod. thanks!

Equipment Used ...

So here, the deal - very simple.

It's a part called a BMW-VIN - which stands for BMW-Video In Motion - and it's made by Nav-Tv.

You can google them for information on installation places throughout the U.S. I had mine done in Connecticut - great place, has done a lot of work for me on lots of different cars.

Again, works perfectly. I couldn't be happier.

Just a follow up. I've been using this new system for the past few days... Still fantastic!

Worth it for anyone even considering it.

buschy 07-14-2008 05:12 PM

make a video and show us.

jeudowe 07-14-2008 05:43 PM

If you can tell me how to post a video on here, I will.

I'd like to hear more on the rear DVD headrests. I thought $3,200 was rediculous for that system BMW wanted and it wasn't even in the headrest.

550 + 150... u got ripped off. Coding is about $200 top usually 150 to whatever. Plug in unit from EAS is 185 shipped. Install takes 10 minutes. Live n learn. I think it's a waste..have it done on my x5 and previous car and barely use it. Maybe cause you have kids...As long as you're happy. :)

Buy an iPad and headrest mount. I move the passenger seat back far enough that my 3 yo can reach it. So she can change the movies or play games. It is secured well enough that it will not fly around (unless it is a really bad crash). Easy enough to remove it I have to spank her with it. And it is way cheaper than headrest DVD player. And you can take it with you when you sell the car or take it into the hotel when your travelling.

^ damn things still need an SD / USB slot though. IPAD2 fail if you're a techie. I would use my Ipad so much more if I didn't have to fricken sync that thing to do what I want.

iPad headrest mount

Does anyone have good recommendation on iPad headrest mount that they have tried or used? Thanks.
