iPhone Integration

I have an iphone and love the way the X5 handles the integration. Has anyone purchased the new adapter that seems to fit into the center console? It appears from the picture that it takes up a significant amount of space, yes? Also, does anyone know if it allows you to use any additional phone features via the idrive?

Thanks -

I believe I saw a picture of it on the BMW website. If you get yourself to the accessories section and to the X5. I think it's listed under communication. I looks to be a cradle that sits in the center console. It says something about it using the cars rooftop antenna for better reception (which is needed around my area of Connecticut with AT&T).

It looks great, but I can't lose the center console for storage space. I was hoping that someone out there had it and could comment. If I learn more about it, I'll let you, and everyone else, know.

Actually, here is the link for the iphone adapter from the BMW accessories site.

I don't have iPhone yet but installed the adapter in my 2008 X5 for my current RAZR. Installation was more difficult than I expected, as I didn't want to take the whole console apart, and there is now a cable, that is hidden by the adapter, exposed in the center console.

Why did I go to this expense and trouble? Because I have AT&T in Connecticut (like you) and was not getting enough bars on my phone. I now get an additional 2 or 3 and typically show 5 bars.

One does lose a lot of space in the center console but I decided that I could live with that. I would not do mod this if my phone reception was better.

And, there is no link to or controlling through iDrive. It still connects via Bluetooth but the advantage is that you are using the car's antenna.

Here's a good article to read about the BMW iPhone snap-in adapter

I have to start looking into whether there will be a snap-in adapter for the iPhone 3G...

Thanks for the information. I'm going to stop by the dealer and have them show me the adapter. I suppose the best way is just to see it and hold it inside the center console and see, first hand, how much space it takes up.

Brian5:

Can you provide the link or otherwise explain the install please. I picked up the parts but am not sure of the hook up. I previously installed the cradle in an e60 M5 without a problem, but I see no feed holes etc for the X5 center console.

Thanks.

I posted some info on the install in this thread and lots in this this one. It still does not have all the info as I exchanged a lot of emails but they should help.
