Engine of the year should be avail. in EVERY model, including E70!
 

I am in a 535 loaner that has the twin turbo 3.0 liter motor. Even with more weight than the 335 that motor pulls like there's no tomorrow. An incredible motor! Add another 1000 pounds to the automobile to get an X5 and I'm sure it will still pull and pull and beg for more. There's not enough road for me to satisfy this engine's lust for speed!

If you haven't test driven a BMW with this motor under the hood, you're missing out on a thrilling experience. I'm also hoping the twin turbo V8 has the same development of power through the power band. It just swells! :wow:

I'm hoping it will be in the 2009.

There were very strong rumors that it was going to be in the 2008 X5 (Roundel, etc.) and I wonder if it was perhaps postponed due to the oil overheating problems they have seen, e.g., they may have found they need to increase oil cooling to ue it in the X5, since the average load factor will be higher due to the increased vehicle weight.

I agree and have said it before. The twin turbo V6 is a no brainer for the X5. You get better performance (similar to the normally aspirated V8) but somewhat better gas mileage than the V8. But then again I'm also waiting for the long-overdue diesel engine to be released in the US.

Well, the diesel's for sure, but the twin turbo gasoline six is still only a rumor.

was wondering about the overheat issues as well but the weights are pretty similar:

X5: 4982 lbs
X6: 4894 lbs

If the xdrive35 can do the twin turbo, no reason the X5 can't. :(

I'm tempted to go feel it out but then again I'd come home regretful settling for the 3.0si so early. I'm loving it so far (not so much for true performance in such a heavy vehicle of course)... no regrets... no regrets... no regrets...

BTW, according to their spec sheets, the xdrive35 is 1.3sec faster to 60mph in the twin turbo.

I bet the 3 litre turbo will go into some sort of facelift in 2010. That motor is well suited for SAVs, with the strong torque that can get the big heavy beast moving from a standstill. It's too much power in a sedan, but would work in a 2075kg X5.

Hey, don't feel so bad about it. The straight 6 naturally aspirated engine is one of Ward's 10 best engines of the year for 06 and 07. It's a reliable, tried and true engine that will endure the test of time, and of course all the abuse from a driver.:D

Correct, and my point wasn't that it couln't be done. My poitn was that it might de delayed while they figure out how to shoehorn an oil cooler into the existing X5 layout... assuming that the new X6 might have one already designed-in.

I don't know, but am merely speculating.
