Underride Protection - too heavy?? Recommended?
I sort of decided to get the underride protection over the aerodynamic kit for the sake of functionality, since underride protection can actually stop debris and stone chippings etc.
But I just have no idea how heavy it is. I'm getting the 3.0is engine and I don't want it to drag around too much extra weight. If it's like 100kg or 200 pounds, then it's probably not worth having it, since it will affect the accleration and fuel consumption. Anyone has any idea how heavy that thing is? I'd like any suggestion on the underride protection. Thanks. |
on E53 it is heavy, indeed. do not know if it is 100kg or less though.
i have 3.0d engine so did not bother too much about its weight. |
BMW engineers worked hard to keep the weight down from the X5. And I feel like I'm un-doing all that weight-saving work by adding the underride protection.
what to do, what to do..... |
why bother getting it? just grab the aero-kit its so much better looking hehehe
|
Where I'm buying it, underride protection is about US$1000 cheaper than the aero kit.

Even if I don't get the underride protection, are the components still protected by something? Maybe a plastic cover to prevent water from going into the engine, oil pan or the radiator?
|
According to ETK, the underride protection, front, weights 13.8 kg.
|
Are you serious? It only weighs about 14Kg? You're not talking about the skid plate, are you?
BTW, what's ETK? Thanks! |
underride protection and not the skid plate.. i don't think i know what you are referring to.

I contacted the dealer. The weight is 13.8 kg. Lighter than I originally thought. But I'm still not getting it though, for the dynamics of the vehicle.
Besides the dealer tells me that all the X5 models are equipped with plastic underride protection, which is fine enough. For those who are curious... |
