let a toothpick soak in hot water for 10-15 mins and run it in between the buttons.

Good advice. I have dome that in the past with a small modification... I cut a round toothpick in half, and then smash the big end of one of the pieces with a pliars so that it is flatter and wider, and then soak it in water.
