Going to a Lower Grade on the X
Ok so there have been several discussions on this topic so I thought let's put it out on a poll!
How many folks out there have made the switch to a lower grade of gasoline? · Premium · Mid-Grade · Regular |
The very small savings isn't worth the performance you'll give up. If you drive a 60K plus vehicle, saving 2 or 3 dollars at the pump shouldn't be a huge deal. Pump the premium gas and enjoy your whip........Phil

Wow, this topic has been beaten to death. I think the Vast! majority of us are not 18 years old, driving a used Honda Civic, eating Ramen and worrying about a few dollars. As mentioned SO many times before, you will save only a few bucks per fill up. Is that really worth it? Also, using lower grade fuel will usually result in a somwhat (albeit small) lower mpg. Just use Premium, as all BMWs are designed for.

Whatever apparent savings you may think you are getting will be lost in mpg. I am saying this based on experience, I tried it on both the X5 and the 330 and what I noticed was about 3-5 mpg drop in fuel efficiency.
It is actually cheaper using the premium petrol |
Here we go again....

Search Threads/posts by "JCL"...it's been beaten to a freakin pulp,
but I like his thesis and info. I've used 89, frequently, on long trips where that tank is run through in a day. Mpg is "trip-like", eg 22-23, regardless of whether it was 93, 91, or 89. No one here has quantitative data on their mpg, and all of the opins, including mine, are simply anecdotal... Run premium, run mid grade, run whatcha like... |
We hardly go anywhere as it is - I think we spend $150/mo. in gas... a few extra bucks isn't going to kill us. I think I'll come out to about 5k miles a year. For those who drive like 100mi. a day... I can see why you'd consider it.

I actually use diesel in mine, and its running just fine.
