Engine and under the car protection
Dear members
I will pick up my 2008 3.0 X5 next week. I live in the North East and with all the snow and salt in the winter I had to replace every 3-4 years the muffler or some part of the exhaust system in my previous vehicles. Also the engine compartment gets extremly rusty by 5 years. This is my first BMW and i want to pamper it from the begining. What do you spray under the car to protect it from rust?. Do you use the same thing in the engine?. Someone mention WD-40, will that protect from rust?. Thank you so much for your time. Your input is appreciated. |
I've seen a thread here with the picture of the undercarriage and it's covered up pretty good. I think spraying it down with some water pressure washer once a week should do you well. I'm not aware of any special treatments/ coatings. I live in Canada and we get lots of salt/sand/ice/snow here. but so far i haven't heard of people greasing under there with motor oil and such.

The dealer told me that underride was specially coated and treated from factory to protect it from such damage.

WD-40 is flammable! Be careful using it near heat sources, such as in the engine bay area. I have no idea why many people seem to think WD-40 is the solution to everything :dunno:

wd-40 seems to just evaporate if you spray on areas that will get hot. when i had my motorcycle i always coated the engine parts with wd-40 and whenever i start her up after a few minutes i see fumes coming off the bike.

Thanks for the replies, i ended up buying ADAMS underide protection spray, I feel that at least avoids dirt and salt to build up. I use my pressure washer monthly to get rid of the dirt. So far working well.
