Missing items from toolkit upon delivery

2 Attachment(s)
I recently took delivery of a brand new 2008 4.8i E70. In comparing some past posts, it looks like there are a couple of items missing from the onboard toolkit. :(

From left to right I DID receive the following:

1) Orange transmission unlock tool

2) Screwdriver

3) Tow fitting

I did NOT receive the following two items (which it looks like others have in earlier 2008 and 2007 models from posted pics):

4) Double open ended wrench

5) Allen wrench (z-shaped) for manual sunroof operation (power failure)

Just to be clear...my toolkit looks like this:

Attachment 26557

While I think it should look like this (minus the wheel lock tool in the top center):

Attachment 26558

I see several people have also taken delivery of their 4.8i in the last few months. Did you guys receive both of these? Has BMW changed the toolkit recently? The manual is very generic and doesn't show a list of included items. It seems weird for these to be missing on a brand new vehicle (with less than 10 miles on it at delivery). What does the open ended wrench fit anyway (presumably at least two different items)?

Also...I did not receive the LED flashlight that is supposed to be in the center console compartment. Can those of you with recent deliveries comment on whether you received this as well?

I plan on contacting my dealer about this, but would like independent confirmation before insisting that stuff is missing.

Thanks,
Loki

I don't know about the toolkits, but I'm missing the flashlight as well. Told the dealer, but says it just didn't come with the flashlight.

Eh~ not a big deal I guess...

golfer4life 08-19-2008 03:21 PM

I never got the flashlight and the other stuff but I definitely received the double open ended wrench and the allen wrench from my 07 Aug. built.

Loki 08-22-2008 01:49 PM

Can a few people with relatively recent deliveries of 08 4.8i from the US market reply regarding the two wrenches? I know that they DID come with the 07s, but I was told by the dealer that they may only be including them in the non-US markets now. I find that a little hard to believe.

Also I know the allen wrench is for manual operation of the sunroof...but what piece(s) does the double open-ended wrench fit?

Thanks

lakai 08-22-2008 07:26 PM

wow you got a spare ?

i took delivery in december 2007 on a 2008 and my toolkit looks like yours bro'.

delivery today

I just took delivery of mine today!!!!!!!!!, I am missing the same items ans also missing the flash light, did you get a 3rd plastic valet key with yours?. I asked my service advisor and he told me they stopped giving the 3rd pastic valet key also. I also didn't get the DVD manual.
Hope this helps, will wax, zaino it and post pics later.

Loki 08-23-2008 03:32 PM

I did not receive a valet key (i.e. wallet key and fob shell). As far as I can tell that was only for the 07s. It was described in the 07 manual, but has been deleted from the 08 manual.

I did not receive a DVD manual. I have never even heard of one before. There are some video clips online describing the features of operation. I find these pretty useless.

I find it strange that they no longer include the wrenches. Especially since the slots in the toolkit holder are still there. Also, the z-shaped allen wrench is actually needed for the sunroof in case of power failure...and even describes this in the 08 manual...so it is not like this a superfluous piece of equipment. I still haven't figured out what the open ended wrech is supposed to fit. I can clearly use my own wrenches if I ever needed them, but it is just weird to have empty spaces for something you know other people got and for which there is clearly assigned slots. I know at least the early MY2008s (US delivered) came with both. I find it hard to believe they just stopped including it at some point during production.

Perhaps they ran low at some point and just shipped the X5s without them? :dunno:

stockguru 11-13-2008 03:39 PM

Just checking... I didn't get the sun roof tool or the double wrench either. Can this be purchased or ordered?

Loki 11-13-2008 04:09 PM

not sure. i went back and bitched and they were able to find both in other vehicles. it took them awhile to find the s-shaped allen wrench and finally located one in a pre-owned E70 that they got from out of state. i don't think bmw is including them anymore as most seem to not get them on new deliveries.

i am glad i was able to get them though. i will probably never use them but it annoyed the hell out of me not having them after spending $73k on a new E70.

jeep 11-13-2008 07:12 PM

I will have to check the toolkit for the tools but I did get the LED Flashlight in my 08 which I got end of August.

JamesD 12-29-2008 12:41 AM

I didn't receive a flashlight or the open-end wrench. Dealer says BMW is "saving money"... Whatever.

pongpap 12-29-2008 04:40 AM

I did not get LED flashlight either :(

bmwman3241 12-29-2008 08:08 AM

Could somebody please take a picture of where the LED flashlight goes. I asked my dealer about it the day I got my car, and they had no idea what I was saying. I don't see a place for a flashlight either in my dashboard.

pongpap 12-29-2008 09:09 AM

If I remember correctly, I think that this flash light goes into cigarettes lighter by the gear to get charged (Saw a picture on accessories catalog).
It's not the square one like we have had on previous BMW models.

soldmystang 12-29-2008 09:10 AM

the flashlight goes inside the center console at the front. not the dashboard.

Have pictures for both, but don't know how to post it here :( Can someone help me with this?

the flashlight that occasionally comes with the vehicle at delivery is not rechargeable. my guess would be the two you have listed are not the same as the one in the new truck.

FYI: I called the dealer last week and they all know the new X5's don't come with certain tools in the kit. I had them order me the open ended wrench and the sunroof opening tool. They are estimating it to be around $8 or so each. I should get it next week.

stockguru 01-01-2009 02:22 AM

Got my tools today. The emergency sunroof tool: (skinny z shaped) was $12 and Part # 54-13-7-000-497.
Open ended wrench was $8 and part # 71-11-1-182-747

Also, for some reason, they ordered me another wrench, similar looking but smaller. No idea what this is for or where it goes, but it was $8 as well so what the hell. Part # 71-11-1-112-893. $30 incl tax well spent imo. Makes the set look complete and gives me peace of mind.

You can see from the pic above where the 2 tools go and what it looks like. I was told BMW parts does not normally carry these and they need to be ordered. I threw the 3rd extra wrench in the storage compartment for now.

is the sunroof Z-shaped tool pictured in the original post 2nd pic? Don't see it.

EDIT>> Nvm, I see it.

X5 Meister 01-02-2009 02:09 AM

Do you know the p/n of the second one? Because my understanding is that BMW never made it available, and it used to be on their accessories website (BMW automobiles - website of the BMW AG , not BMW North America) and now it is no longer there.

my 08 EU spec car toolkit is the same as on your pic. I don't have the sun roof tool or the double wrench either

I got this pic from a 2008 catalog in Doha (International version from BMW AG) so no price or part number listed. Unlike the North American version that come with part number and price.
You can try to print out this pic and show them to the BMW parts department. Maybe they can try to find it in their accessories data base

Goodluck hunting for this LED flash light ;)

pongpap 06-01-2009 04:39 AM

Try these two part number

63319148677 Flashlight LED small
63319139112 Flahslight LED large

X5 Meister 06-01-2009 06:10 AM

The one in the photo is neither of these two. I checked with several dealers a little while back and none had a clue in hell.

I don't know off-hand what the part numbers are but I purchased the BMW flashlight (larger one) on eBay.

They look like this. The larger one fits nicely in the front of the center console.

X5 Meister 06-01-2009 04:04 PM

Yeah, I know about those. My question refers to the very small rechargeable one that fits into the cigarette lighter socket.

Sorry, hadn't read all 30 posts. Thought it was still about the OP's questions.

I got one of these "spotlights" which I keep plugged into the 12V outlet inside my center console. It's similar to the BMW one that you are looking for.
