3.0si sluggish off the line?
We test drove a 3.0si last week, and the main major complaint was that the car was pretty anemic accelerating from 0mph; seemed ok once the vehicle was moving. The X5 we drove only had 90miles on the odo, so I'm wondering if it gets better post-breakin? Not sure how much it would improve. For reference, our E53 3.0 didn't feel this way despite being 35hp short.
The other thing we noticed was that there was a bit of general noise in the cabin. ie. wind, traffic noise compared to our E53 and a 535i we also drove. Would appreciate any thoughts, esp those who've previously owned an E53 (3.0). tia. |
It is sluggish from start but it soon picks up the pace.
I think it's b/c of the 6 spd gearbox that it changes to 2nd gear too quickly. |

My 08 3.0 is a bit sluggish, but popping it into sport mode or just keeping it in a lower gear takes care of it. Going to the 4.8 is a catch22, you're going to use more gas (if that's a concern) either way, over acceleratin the 3.0 or normal acceleration on the 4.8 probably results in the same MPG.
I will say that once it's past 2nd gear, acceleration isn't a problem. I'm hoping that once i get a few more miles on it it will loosen up and/or the tranny will adjust to my driving (i.e. hold lower gear longer to get moving faster) I haven't noticed a noise issue. |

I always start off in sport mode and change to regular after attaining some speed. There is a lag in 3.0 because it being a heavy vehicle but starting off in sport mode does take care of it.

Wait, so even in auto mode, the trans will sometimes start in 2nd? I guess we'll have to go back and test Sport mode.
Don't think the 'rentz will go for the 4.8 and it's $8k premium over the 3.0si. Our sale guy told us that V8 models in general aren't doing too well sales wise, so there's a concern about depreciation, esp with the diesel coming out and potentially the N54 also. |
I noticed my 2008 3.0si started off slow when I first got it, but the transmission seems to have gotten used to my driving because now it seems fine (I am 17,000 miles now).
Sport mode indeed changes the driving characteristics. In sport mode, the vehicle accelerates much quicker and shifts much faster. |
I think a lot of it is simply mass and torque. Weighing in at over 2275kg (nearly 5000 lbs), I really think the N52 is merely adaquate getting off the line. Diesel is probably the best choice between performance and consumption. I've driven the V8 and thought the acceleration was more suitable than a I6 (which is fast in the lighter X3) given its size and immense mass.

I just got mine and have less than 200 miles on it. it seems to be ok off the line but at cruising speeds, it really decelerates without stepping on the gas pedal. feels like the auto trans is downshifting. Does everyone else exprience this and does it get better after break in? sometimes it feels like the brakes have been hit as the car drops from 30 mph to 10 mph real quick.
