how many quarts does the 3.0 take:: 6qt ; 7 qt ; 8qt ???
with oil filter change;?? how many
'without' oil filter change?? how many?
how does one remove the air filter inlet hose to the air filter housing?
my dealer says 8qt. but i've heard other numbers

I've heard your owner's manual has this info. It happens to be in your glove box as well as posted on the home page.

AzNMpower32 09-19-2008 10:50 PM

It should be 6,5 litres.

REDHORSE 09-20-2008 12:16 AM

to vinunero
u think u can find oil cap in the owners book? try
home page either.
be helpful , not a pain

Is it supposed to be 6 POINT 5 or 6 COMMA 5?:D

REDHORSE 09-20-2008 12:58 AM

it's simple.to avoid a helpful answere and to tell a forum member to check his owners manual for the answere(that is not there!)is being a pain.i am asking a honest question that i've turned to the forum for help, as i've been told different qty's at several dealers(in parts and service advisors).
surely, some on the forum won't go 16k before they fill compelled to change out their oil.i did @ 11k.oil very dirty.will send sample to blackstone for their look-see.

kabayan! if you still have the manufacturers warranty, you must have a regular maintenance & check up in the dealership instead of doin it by yourself or else they might void your warranty. im not really so sure but you can ask the dealership...:dunno:

autoque 09-20-2008 01:06 AM

I haven't reached the 16k miles yet, but does BMW change the oil/filter for free of charge only at that interval? Like no oil/filter change at all before 16k miles? 'Cause that sounds like such a long time before your new car gets any maintenance done.

I mean the free maintenance is for 50,000 miles and that means only about two times of oil/filter change.

REDHORSE 09-20-2008 01:20 AM

thnaks pare.yes..i know owners have "free"maint..and i'll go in the 12th month reguardless.but as an owner not leasee, leaving oil in till 16k isn't the way i am going.there 'must' be some 'DYI's' on this forum that have
worked on their 2008 X5's.that's all.just need the 'correct qty's'..drop'd my old oil(very dirty)put six in ,says full but i was under the impression
it took maybe 7 or 8 qts..

motordavid 09-20-2008 08:28 AM

Redhorese,
Your question has come up before and it took some serious digging
to find the solution, (see four page thread linked; worth a read.)

The 4.8 capacity seems to be pretty well nailed down at 8.5 qts;
the 3.0 capacity less so, though I would bet it takes the 7.9/8.0
qts that all the X5 3.0 engines have taken throughout the series.

And, you are correct: in the E70 "manual" written with Biff&Buffy in
mind, there is no oil fill capacity. My E53 3.0 has always taken 8 qts
after a long drain; imo, your E70 3.0 will too.

PS/Edit...if you remain unsure/unconvinced I would hope one of the genius techs at your local stlr,
has the answer; maybe not the "SA", but a tech should be able to recite it off top of his head.

Attached is the official bulletin from BMW TIS stating the oil capacity. Indeed for the N52 & N54 motors, the capacity is 6,5 litres.

pokemon 09-20-2008 09:04 PM

6.9 US qts is the factory spec. 7qts will do since you can't drain all the oil from the bottles anyway. My owner's manual tells me how much WWF it holds and gasoline, it tells nothing about oil amount.

REDHORSE 09-25-2008 03:57 AM

thnaks to motordavid&aznmpower32 for solid info on the correct oil qty for
my x5 3.0 n52..6.5L works..put on 542mil this past weekend(L.V. NEV)
oil qty sceen say 'full'. i did not change the oil filter and put in 6qt.
i did compute a gas milege increase(using BMW 5w30)from around 18.3ave
to 20.9 for 542.5miles total..note=zero oil consumption 11,500mil.
>>anyone know how to remove the air input hose that covers the oil filter???

reblux5 09-30-2008 11:05 AM

Annual oil change

BMW will change your oil and filter, annually, at no charge if you haven't reached 12,000 miles a year.
