Hi folks,
just wanted to introduce my new "baby" that I picked up 3 weeks ago. Bought it from a BMW employee with 5.200kms on the clock / 4 months old. Was able to configure the car the way I wanted before order.

It's nearly fully equipped (adaptive drive, active steering, comfort seats w/ ventilation, panoramic roof, sports package w/ 214, HiFi Pro, Navi Pro, TV, +++) and after 5.000kms the last 3 weeks I am very happy driving with it.
Top speed (yep - this is Germany...) is 245kms/h, which should be approx. 152mph (see pic). Consumption is about 16 miles per gallon.

Here is some pictures to say "Thank You!" for loads of information / pictures / ideas / etc. that I was able to retrieve from this forum...

Btw. the pipes are Powersprint-Pipes. I like the look much better than the series.

Comments very welcome. More details if wanted.

Regards from Germany - X5_Newbie

Is that quad exhaust a stock?

autoque 10-09-2008 10:08 AM

Oh never mind. It says Powersprint.

AzNMpower32 10-09-2008 10:16 AM

Sie haben TV-Funktion! Schönes Auto ;)

BMW NA is dragging its feet and not releasing any information, even though it is supposed to be released for 2009.

kimg9582 10-09-2008 10:22 AM

Is that 240 km/h? That's about 150 mph. Nice!

X5_Newbie 10-09-2008 10:42 AM

Thx!
@ Autoque: no, it's aftermarket (Powersprint aka Supersprint). About 600 US-$ incl. installation.
@ AzNM: Dankeschön! :) What does it mean "BMW is dragging its feet..." - is it for the motor (3.0sd / now: 35d)?. For me, it is a very favorable motor. Loads of torque, yet OK quite and "soft".
@kimg: Yep - that was a questions that wasn't answered to my satisfaction with xoutpost.com (or Motortalk.de in Germany) when I ordered the car. So I just had to try max. speed immediately after taking over. Everything above 220 km/h (135 mph) is a bit tiring, below it's absolutely OK.

BMW NA said the diesels would be out for model year 2009. Well, technically it's already MY 2009 and no one has the ordering bulletin nor pricing for the US. (It is out for Canada though). First it was supposed to be November delivery, now some folks are rumoring January. I think Corporate is holding out on us, not bothering to sell the diesels at all. But BMW NA does that all the time anyways.

I hope your overall consumption is better than 16l/100km though. That's terrific for 240 km/h, but at lesser speeds I hope its more along the lines of perhaps 8 liters? BMW quotes 8,2 l combined.

Wir werden nur den xDrive35d bekommen, und nicht mit 286PS, sondern 265PS.

Craig 10-09-2008 12:11 PM

I've heard mid to late January for the diesel in the U.S. I've also heard the diesel will be 2800.00-3000.00 higher than the 3.0 gas engine option. I'm waiting for the diesel as well...

Very nice, I love the exhaust tips

Ajogu 10-09-2008 02:23 PM

Damit, you got the heated steering wheel. I missed out on that. Cool exhaust.
Another thing I wish I got was the webasto option.
I drove the my sd X5 all weekend and was quite impressed with the performance. Average fuel consumption is 14l/100km over 1800km and thats with the wife driving 95% of the time.
Enjoy your X.

golfer4life 10-09-2008 03:15 PM

 Great ride. Love the exhaust!

DSE 10-09-2008 05:54 PM

I am waiting as well. What would be nice is if the new diesel has the new iDrive. It seems odd to offer the new diesel in teh US only to add the new iDrive a few months later.

wow I thought I had a lead foot :) I've put 15000km's on my 3.0sd's odometer so far and the main consumption meter which I haven't reset since taking delivery (not the normal journey one) is showing 9.6L/100 over that 15000k's

Craig 10-09-2008 07:52 PM

Two different dealers have told me, the new I drive would be on all 09 X5's.
I've read on here, it won't be out until spring. I don't know who's right, but can't understand why there isn't any info from BMW on the release date of the diesel...

how did you configure it the way you want if you bought it used from a BMW employee?

X5_Newbie 10-14-2008 04:27 AM

Thats' an easy one to answer...

That's an easy one to answer:
There is 2 ways how to do:
First, (in my case) the BMW employee put his order on offer in the Internet (www.mobile.de) before Ordering. So I contacted him and we made a pre-contract and a upfront payment that I was going to buy the car after his "keeping limits" (usually 6 months / 6-9 thsd kms).
Secondly, if you hit the German BMW Website, you have the chance to configure a car you want and then BMW routes this configuration to their employees on a inner-company-site, so that every employee that is entitled for a employee car can check out if there is a car he likes to drive as well and would be able to sell afterwards. The contact between employee and private buyer is than made through BMW.

However, going for that buying model you can not finance your car nor there is a VAT shown, which makes it a "no-option" for most private buyers or companies.

@ all: Concerning the new I-Drive Controlling Unit: the German BMW Car Magazine states that the new I-Drive will only be available for the MY 2010 in the E70. Bad news though.

@ AzNMpower32: Nope, overall consumption is about 13,9l (=16,8 mpg) with me, but I'm usually quite fast on my way. If you keep pushing the pedal (speed 200-220 km/h, approx 124-136 mph), consumption goes up to 15l/100km (=15,7 mpg).
If you really let it go relaxed (about 130km/h = 80 mph), consumption is no less than 11,5 l (=22 mpg).
So 8,2 l / 100kms (=29,4 mpg) is a theoretically dream value. I know the way they test this - it's a european standard testing in a laboratory with the car being on "rolls" and driving winds made by ventilators. So nothing to do with reality but helps to compare cars against each other! Keep in mind that options make the car way heavier and so consumption figures go up.

Thanks to all for your nice comments. Makes me even prouder of that "dream machine" :).
Kindest regards - X5_Newbie

Hi X5_Newbie,

don't shock the US guys here with your consumption :). They can't drive the way we can do sometimes here. If you drive 100km/h (62 mph) over longer distance with the cruise control the 8l (26mpg) should be possible. O.k. that's not the funny way...but it's possible

I had two dealers tell me the new I drive would be on all 09's. Anyone in the U.S. know for sure?

yeah I just did a brisbane<->sydney trip which is ~950k's each way and got 8.3L/100 which is (US)28.3mpg - and that was with an avg speed of only 81kph (daytime, a lot of roadworks, traffic and annoying sprawling towns with 50kph speed limit from one side to the other)

y5choi 10-14-2008 08:16 PM

looks very similar to my 4.8i  got the same interior color/trim and exterior color
