I don't hear this sound after driving highway speeds, but only after my 7 mile commute on surface streets. I first noticed it when I parked in my garage at home and went to the right corner of the car to turn on the sprinkler system.
So I wasn't looking for the sound or straining to find it, but it found me. After that I would look for it and I did the videos the way I did simply to better hear the noise from the X over against competing outside noises since my little camera has a simple microphone. I am 2008 4.8 driving with sport on the 20" OEMS, if that makes a difference. No third row seats or adaptive driving. |
2007 4.8i 20" OEM 214's sports pkg no 3rd row, no adaptive drive.
I have the "ting" popping sounds but it never bothers me. just part of the design I figured. Car didn't give me any problems (well since I fixed the rattle in the back ;) ). |

I wonder if it is easier to hear this pop on my video because of where the camera was located (hand resting on right rear tire). On the other hand, I heard this noise including the pop long before sticking the video camera into the right wheel well. |
well, near the end of the video the noise seems really loud probably due to microphone echo but yeah i hear some sound coming from the rear when the car's parked just after driving around. Doesn't bother me though. Could be the exhaust condensing and cooling down? it sounds metallic like the sound you hear from baseboard heaters ?
I'm just not alarmed by it at all. |

Can we get a video of it, without the camcorder shoved into the wheel well(maybe inside or a couple feet away from the rear wheel).... It does sound loud and obnoxious in the vids though... but maybe you're just a tad more anal than I am... or maybe not..LOL :stickpoke I've kept a close ear on that for the past couple of weeks, and still have yet to hear anything like that.... Again, I don't put my head up to the rear of the truck after wheeling it, nor do I park it in a parking garage that amplifies the sound... so I'm not sure |
It rained yesterday so I tried to get video of this noise when I got to the office. The problem was competing sounds like small jets from the little airport that is across the street from our office.
So after taping 10 minutes of that constant sound, I finally heard the release but kneeling by the right tire while also hearing jets and morning rush traffic, maybe the sound was more like rh71 has described. I will convert this tape tonight and see if it is more distinct than what I heard. If so, then I will post a link to the new video. On a lighter note, I could have purchased premium for $2.41 this morning. Edited to say I got it for $2.40 on my way home. BTW, how do I know if I have adaptive drive? I thought I saw a sentence in a post about having the push button for sport but can't trust my memory. |
All,
Please do not worry about the Krackle/Pop noise that you will get once you rotate your steering wheel one full circle or so while driving/backing out of driveway .... My 05 X5 had the same issue and the Houston Dealer ended up getting lubricant from Germany which was applied to a few parts and it fixed the problem. I can find the Case # and post it here. I'm not technical when it comes to cars but I remember the ugly feeling I got when I drove my X5 and it would make that noise. |
Alright, the following link is of the constant noise from the right rear wheel well that ends with a kind of pop: http://www.pctii.org/Video/RearNoiseStop2.mpg
The video is black because it was dark outside. I was kneeling by the right rear tire and shooting toward the back of the tire. Some outside noises can be heard and I don't really know if this helps answer my original question. |
I don't think I've heard the "pop" near the end of the video coming from my X before, but I do hear the ting sound heard in the middle of the video.
