Friend damaged a 214 rim on my X5

Today I let a friend of mine, a big BMW fan (3-series owner), drive my X5 for a little test-drive. I was with him in the vehicle. As we were leaving the garage, he made a 90-degree left turn and scratched left rear rim against the curb... The damage looks quite ugly. He is willing to pay for the repair. What is the best way to handle that? Polish it out somewhere? Have it replaced? Make a insurance claim? Can he make a claim on his policy to have the rim replaced?

I have 214 rims. Pristine after only 2 months of owning the vehicle.

How much a repair could be?

I'm upset, very upset...

Ouchhh.... how bad is the damage ? is it cosmetic or deep rash..... if its deep it might jeopardize the integrity of the wheel which you do not want to fool around with........

There have been previous posts and I've posted a couple on repair options too.

If he's paying, just take it to your BMW dealer. In my area, they charge $250 per wheel. It might be cheaper where you are.

Normal auto insurance will not cover.

There are people who specialize in this kind of repair. I had it done on the e-60 some months back. I got lucky though I spotted the guy doing it at the BMW dealer. Turns out he was an acquaintance. Cost $125.00. Results? fantastic. Ask the Guys in the back at the dealership if they know who repairs wheels. Have him come to your house and do yours.

imho..chit happens..give him some friendly grief, and eat the cost......

This is wife's ride. There is more than just cost associated with that. To make things worse, today is her birthday.

The damaged wheel i spoke about was on my wife's ride, and I'm the one who did it. Was she upset? Of course she was but I got busy and fixed it right away. If you ask her to find the damage she cannot. It was done, it was fixed, it's over.

sorry to know about this. he must have been a really good friend for you to trust him with your wife's X. I am sure he is upset as much as you are. Things happen. As the experts suggested, you can get it fixed and it'll be all behind you. good luck.

I was pretty upset too... but it's not noticeable unless you're looking for it. I have decided to leave mine until I possibly do more damage to it. It's the wider rear wheels, I'm telling ya. In a normal car, the only time I've ever scraped my tires is parking alongside curbs, never turns... it's not supposed to be a truck, but I guess it is.

I got my right rear 214's scratched up too. Go talk to the dealer. They usually have people fixing rims (for their preowned selling prep). I've heard it's really not that expensive to fix it. good luck

My friend who caused the damaged found a reputable place that can fix the rim. I will drop off the wheel on Monday and slap a spare on. They should get it fixed by Wednesday. In the meantime, I will be limping on a spare. Good thing I did not get a 3rd-row, I wouldn't have a spare and had to leave the car with them.

Check the following link:

To replace the wheel would be $450, but it looks like if you have an exchange, it would only be $400. Might be worth a look if cost is $250 to repair. Good luck.
