Service interval reset???

Anyone know how to reset the service interval on the E 70??

Firstly with the ignition switched on, set the trip meter back to zero by pushing it once. Then switch the ignition back off again. (I found this step was critical, otherwise I couldn't get to the "Service" menu).

Now you are ready to go through the reset steps as follows:

1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car.

2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service"
3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of theBrake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu).

4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window.

5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on.

6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear.

7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. As soon as it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above).

Hints & Tips
Before actually resetting anything, go through steps 1, 2 and 6 above until you are familiar (and sure) what you want to reset. Practice this a few times and note down in what order the icons appear after the initial "Service" icon appears.

If you do happen to hold the button down too long against an item you don't want to reset and the "RESET?" appears, just leave the button alone for 10 seconds or so and it will not let you reset the item. (Alternatively just switch the ignition off and start again).

Sometimes if you have not released and pressed the button again quickly enough, when you hold it down again the German technical writing will appear after about 15 - 20 seconds instead of the Service item icon you were expecting. (If this happens just switch off the ignition and start again).

Once you are sure what item you want to reset and are confident of the sequence, then give it a go. If you do hesitate between releasing and pressing the button at any time, you will have to go back to the beginning and start again as "he who hesitates is lost".

I just did it on my 07 X5.
I came to the service to do n early oil changhe and my computer was still showing 3,500 kms to the oil change but it was more then a year in between, so they have changed it for free but did not reset the computer, saying that BMW will not pay for a reset unless the computer is showing it, so I have asked them if I could do it myslef instead of waisting my time and coming back. They said I could if I knew what to do.

It is not a good idea to reset the serice interval for an early oil change, as it will mess-up the preprogrammed intervals for the other maintenance items, such as inspection II, etc.

An early oil change is good, but leave the service interval counter alone.

That is the reason BMW specifies the interval should not be reset for an annual oil change, not because of the cost or labor involved.

I agree with you, but not in my case.
Upon leaving the dealership, computer was at 1,400km until an oil change and was giving me already a warning, so what I did, basically, just saved myself a trip into the dealership, where they would do the same thing...
correct me if I am wrong.
There is no such thing as an Inspection I or II anymore.

Prior to the E70 I have driven many miles in a Bimmer over the years and have never gone over the 10,000 miles on an oil change and have manually reset the service indicator. Now with the above info I will continue on my old ways. I do not like warning lights when I know they aren't warning me about anything. Everyone has to do what they have to do!! That must be a recent change. Thanks for the information.

I have tried to reset my service interval as shown above with no success. I get the service triangle but when I release the button to repush I get the date etc again. If I hold the button in I get the geman gibberish.

Try it again, sometimnes it takes awhile to master it.
It took mysef 5-6 times to get it right.
It will work.

120 times and counting, I can not get past the triangle goes back to time and weather each time. Any ideas?:(

I just replace my rear break pads and and want to reset the warning but I cant get this to work tried loads of times could someone who has got it to work maybe do a video and post it on youtube for me

I believe the BMW brake pad wear sensors are one-time use only, and must be replaced if they have triggered the warning light. Did you replace the sensor when you did the brake job?

Ok cracked it !!!

What you need to do is put the fob in and press the start engine button but dont put your foot on the break (otherwise the engine will start) then continue to follow the instructions as already posted I will do a video of this over the weekend and post it

Some items have to be reset in the iDrive. I had to reset my SOS inspection message (date driven not milage) in the service menu. If you bring up the alert itself you can click downward and the option to adjust the date is present. Warning gone!

Ok, I will try this today at lunch time. Thanks for the quick response! I suppose this is setup this way because you can have the inspection done outside of BMW. In Florida, there are no inspections, so a reset is all I need.

This is good info now that i'm out of the maintenance plan. And since it's now on my dime, how often should I change my oil if I do low mileage (6500/yr) - BMW seems to have a separate list item for low mileage oil changes and for whatever reason, the last time was only after 6 months even though mileage was going at the same rate. Would I want to go past once a year with their synthetic? Should I do it per mileage or time?

This worked flawlessly for me to reset my brake pad service interval. Bring up the Service requirements Status screen if you have iDrive and you will see the indicator change confirming proper execution. Thanks for the great info!
