Bulletproofing the X5..... your thoughts on Suspension issues!!!

Hi guys,

Level 3+ suspension adds 550-650 pounds to the vehicle, basically what weights more is the windows... the rest has kevlar and other components....

Lets not even talk about level 5.

Ok my question is, will this hurt my Adaptive Suspension System on the 2008 4.8i?

lets see, having the vehicle with 4 persons, each one weight 150 pounds, thats 600 pounds.....

you guys think that i will have any problems???

thanx guys!

The real question might be even if you have a fly car, the type of rims you put on it can either make it look totally better or it can make it look disgusting. These days, there are so many rims to choose from that it makes the consumers decision kind of hard no matter what level your reaching for. Everybody wants the chrome, the 20+ inches, and the fat 6 inch lip. But for those of you who really want to stand out you gotta get these. Make sure you watch the video. Very important when your trying to get to the best of level 3+... http://www.premiumautomods.com/pimp-...light-up-rims/

How did this thread turn into a joke. I would think that the extra weight of the bulletproof armor and passengers weight wont hurt the suspension, it will hurt the performance for sure. Please post pics of the finished product and costs also. GL

I suggest doing web searches for David Beckham's bullet-proofed X5's. You will find that he had two stolen (I think it those were arranged by Audi as they gave him a new Q7 to replace it :) ) but you might be able to find some specs too.

Is it a 3rd party add-on or the Security from BMW?

Dr.Darwin 11-01-2008 03:28 AM

It is 3rd party, but more built-in than add-on.
Certified workmanship, materials, windows... Engineered and upgrade of parts to accomodate the extra weight. Runflat inserts, armor of critical engine components. Many options available.

Dr. Darwin: what kind of estimate are you getting? I'm curious to know if the window would be too thick as a mod.

Without going into too many details, if you are planning on adding armored windows only, I would not recomend so. The glass is much thicker than standard so a lot of fitting is done. The interior is modified to fit the ballistic glass and even the hinges on the doors are changed in order to carry the extra weight without sagging.

Regarding an estimate on the cost. Without having the exacte price, you can more or less expect to pay double the basic X5.
The whole car is stripped down, and armoring is added throughout the vehicle.
One of the more expensive items is the windshield, which on some vehicles can cost in excess of $6000.

mrkbbd 11-06-2008 09:22 PM

do you have a legitimate need for armoring?

lakai 11-07-2008 08:50 PM

Are you looking for protection for just small arms fire or something that can withstand rpg or IED attacts ?

Christiaan 11-08-2008 11:39 AM

what do you mean legitimate? (no i just want to drop $30k, just dont know where,lol)...

lakai, yes just small arms fire, nothing too big, you really cant go any bigger on a X5 to be honest....

If you want to save on weight, theres a method where you could go with thinner steel plates and kevlar. Kind of like bullet proof vests on top of the steel

EDR0000 11-11-2008 08:48 PM

Or move to another neighborhood. That's got to be less than $50k.

BMW has a security version out. i've seen a thread here of it before. I don't know how the adaptive drive is configured on that though..
