When I put my car in "Drive", it goes back to "Park"...PLEASE HELP!

Does anyone know what to do? I have an 08 x5 and sometimes when I put it in reverse or drive it goes back into park RIGHT AWAY. And then, a symbol comes on my drivers screen with a drawing of the car and on top of the car an arrow pointing both directions....does anyone know what that means and how to solve the problem?

Is it possible that you have the drivers door open?
That would automatically put the vehicle back into park

close your door

Sorry guys but your kind of right. I tried what you are saying and the drawing of the car comes up with the arrows on top but if you put it in reverse it doesnt just automatically put it in park. My "problem" is that if I put it in reverse or drive it jumps right back into park.

If I try what you guys said and keep my door open and put it in reverse, only the warning symbol comes up but it keeps it in the gear which I chose. Has anyone else had this problem??
