Which wire from cig lighter is 12v power?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to tap into the cig. lighter to get power to my radar detector. The bundle of wires from the lighter is actually 3 separate wires.. One thick brown, One thick green with a red stripe, and one thin gray/red wire. Any idea which one is the +12v?

Thanks,
Neil

12v wire

my recollection is that it's the one with the red stripe. if you have a tester you can tap into the wire and attach to a ground and the light should come on.

Yes red strip (red=hot)

I am assuming this is the green wire, right? I figured that the thick one makes sense since the other red wire seems too thin.

The only problem is that it's still not working for some reason.. For the ground, I used the screw right in front of the bundle (but I used the one on the driver's side).

I figured it out. The ground was the problem. For anyone doing this, the positive is the green wire with the red stripe. When you remove the carpet on the sides of the console, you will see 3 bolts. All of them will not conduct, but they are all screwed into a metal frame that does conduct. So just make sure that you somehow make the ground wire touch the metal frame. I unscrewed one of the screws then slid the negative wire underneath so that it is between the screw and the frame, and then tightened the screw. This is a lot easier to do then say, but whoever does this will understand exactly what i am talking about
