Scratches Help Please!
Hello all. Well, it has finally happened. After months of babying my 2008 X5, my dog put several scratches into the finish of the car. We drove to an all day social function in someone else’s vehicle and it appears that my lovable German Shepherd got lonely and tried to look into the windows of the X5 to see if my girlfriend and I were in the car. Now I have about 3 to 4 scratches on each door. Does anyone have any advice for removing such scratches other than taking it to a dealer? I am in Spain and dealers in Spain charge outrageous fees for any work that they do (5 or more times what is paid in the US). How deep is it - can you see black "metal"?

The more shallow scratches are now not visible unless you're looking for them. I did use the Scratch-X on it at home afterward and didn't notice any further improvement. Perhaps because it was already done as best as it could at the dealer. I too baby my cars (depending on parking conditions at our destination, I won't drive the X there)... so I can feel your pain. |
The scratches are not deep and I cannot see the primer. One has to really look to notice them, BUT I know that they are there...

Like rh71 said, I would try scratch x. Not sure if you have an orbital buffer (something like a porter cable) if so, you can use some Meguairs scratch removal products on trying to buff it out.

It does not sound like a deep scratch. I wouldn't take it to the dealer if they didn't do it. Take it to a detail shop or try applying some polish and buffing it out by hand.

Thanks for the advice. Based upon recommendations, I am going to try the Scratch X. I am nervous about using such products because I am fearful of damaging the finish in the process of removing the scratches. Has anyone had poor results with this product (other than it not working as they had hoped)?

It should work fine for those scratches. Apply with foam applicator and wipe off with some microfiber towels. Worst thing is it won't work and you will need a polish that has more cutting power. Most of the Meguiar's over the counter in retail stores aren't that great. They normally just hide scratches and show back up as the cleaner wears off.
