E70 4.8 Winter Set Up
 

I just bought a 2008 4.8 X5, but need advice on a winter set up. I am currently running on the 20 inch sport rims with the SP Sport Maxx tires. Is it possible to just switch the tires to a winter season tire, or do i need to purchase a 18 inch wheel and winter tires. Also If i switch from 20s to 18s will this cause any issues with the speedometer, or traction control, etc?

3-4 makes of tyre available in 19's, all winter runflats.

Just fitted Dunlop winter RF to my X6, had to buy a 2nd set of rims as i also run 20's, but can only get 19's in winter RF.

I have an 07 with the exact setup as yours. I bought a winter tires package from BMW with 18" and Dunlop winters (Grandtrek GT3). They are really nice in snow and ice and no there isn't any problem with speedometers and such by putting on the 18"s. I find that that is the best setup, even though you can just swop out the rubber- narrower tires are better for snow and ice.

Agree with this recommendation. This is what I did on my 2008 E70. Bought the BMW winter tire package which is four "BMW light-alloy wheels star-spoke 209 (18"), Dunlop GRANDTREK WT M3 (DSST, RSC, RunOnFlat, M+S), 255/55 R18."

I have the same package as y5choi and brian5. I live in New York City but I drive out to Connecticut several times a week and today is the first snow day we've had. The tires were amazing in the snow/slush. I regretted spending the extra money at first but now I'm really glad I did. I like the way Dunlop Grandtrek GT3s handle on dry roads too.

I'd have to add that my 20s on Toyo Proxes All-Seasons drove fine yesterday in the same storm... I was out there for an hour and with the speed everyone was going, there were no problems with the tires and slipping whatsoever. Unless you're driving in deeper snow a lot, you can stay with 20s... just swap out of the summer tires.
