Quick Review of New Toyo Proxes II

Fellow X5ers...I just swapped out my stock Dunlop 20's (4.8i sport package) for Toyo all-seasons in 20's.

The tires are very sure footed in the recent bad weather in the northeast. They are significantly more comfortable from a ride perspective and they are significantly quieter!

One thing I don't quite like is that they don't give you much in the way of rim protection like the Dunlap's did...will post pics next week.

good news... I drove in the 20s w/ Proxes S/T (original) in the same storm with no trouble as well. I looked into the new ones when they came out... I wish they kept the same aggressive tread design but they went slightly more conservative though it looks more functional.

But good to know these things have a good rep.

What is the treadware rating on these? I was very disappointed in how quickly I ran through the tread on the Dunlop's.

Hi,

I did not find Toyo tires on Tirerack. Where can you find it online? As far as I know they do not offer run flat like the OEM by BMW... What is the advantage choosing Toyo over OEM tires? May be much cheaper but as good quality as OEM?

Thanks.
Mugen

Mugen - i picked them up from 1010tires.com and had my dealer install them. I put about 9K on the stock Dunlop runflat 20's so my plan was to put them back on before lease end.

I will say that i didn't feel any substantial performance loss in terms of cornerning and general performance. In fairness, I don't push the car very much!

With shipping the damage from 1010tires was around $1050 and installation was $250ish. But I live in NYC and only have one car so the summers weren't an option for the winter.

can I use 20" rims on a 2008 3.0 WITHOUT sports package?

THANKS! any suggestion for a good place to buy the rims from?

I'm in NY as well and there's a place on LI that advertised the Toyos as an X5 20" staggered package on ebay... that's how I found them. Came out to about $1k installed after "local pickup".

As for the rims, OEM or replica? Replica can be bought from wheelsandcaps.com (also on ebay for the same price). Good experience. Also about $1k so together I spent $2k, which is a good $1k cheaper than OEM rims + tires according to my calculations.

And no, no runflats for Toyos... got away from runflats because of both the harshness of the ride and cost of replacement. I do have a spare because of no 3rd row.

As for treadwear, 1010tires had a good rating on these but now they don't appear anymore as they are no longer sold [as new]. It was at least a 4 of 5 on the wear rating as I recall - I looked for it to as it was an important factor. So far I'm on 4k miles and they show no signs of wear... that's all I can tell you.
